Common Problems

Where brass parts go wrong

Most brass jobs fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the alloy. They fail because a shop did not plan for the material.

01

Do your threads tear or gall?

Free-cutting brass cuts fast, but wrong feeds and dull tooling smear the flanks of fine threads. A 0.5 mm pitch thread on a Ø6 mm fitting is scrap once the crest is torn. We set feed per revolution per alloy, not per shop habit.

02

Does the surface come back scratched?

Brass is soft. Parts that tumble against each other or sit loose in a bin arrive with dents that no polishing removes. We bag and separate turned parts and control the finish step by step, not as one batch.

03

Are your wall thicknesses drifting?

Thin brass walls move when the tool pushes. A 0.8 mm wall on a connector shell can bow 0.05 mm if the roughing pass is too heavy. We leave even stock and take light finishing passes on both sides.

04

Did the last shop go quiet after quoting?

You send a STEP file, hear nothing for a week, then get a price with no DFM notes. If a corner radius cannot be cut or a hole is too deep for the drill, you should hear it before the first chip, not after delivery.

How We Machine Brass

A process built around a soft, fast-cutting alloy

Brass rewards a shop that controls speed, chip evacuation and handling. Here is what we do differently.

CNC Lathe Technical Specifications Terminology
Turning

Turned brass parts on mill-turn centers

Most brass parts are round. Fittings, bushings, valve bodies, terminals and adapters all start on a lathe, and many of them never leave it. Our 16 mill-turn centers cut the OD, bore and threads, then mill flats, slots and cross holes in the same setup. One chucking means one datum, so the bore and the cross hole stay concentric instead of drifting against each other.

Free-cutting grades like C36000 run at high surface speed with a good chip. We set feed per revolution so the chip breaks instead of wrapping the tool, and we keep coolant directed at the cutting edge to stop built-up edge from dulling the finish.

Milling

Milled and drilled brass components

Flat brass parts need different care. Plates, busbars, manifold blocks and RF shields are often thin, and thin brass vibrates. We hold them on vacuum plates or in soft jaws machined to the part profile, take light axial cuts, and climb mill the finishing pass so the edge does not burr.

Drilling is where brass punishes a careless program. A standard 118° drill grabs in soft alloy; we use lower helix angles and modified point geometry, peck shallow, and back the tool out fast so the chip clears. Deep holes get pilot drilled first.

What We Make

Brass and copper part families

One shop for round parts, flat parts and assemblies. Most jobs ship in 3–5 days.

01

Turned fittings and adapters

Threaded brass fittings from Ø5 mm to Ø120 mm. We cut NPT, metric and BSP threads and gauge them before shipping.

02

Bushings and bearing sleeves

Sleeve bearings with controlled bore tolerance and oil grooves. Bores held to ±0.005 mm where the shaft demands it.

03

Electrical contacts and pins

C110 and beryllium copper contacts, spring pins and terminals. Plating options include silver, gold and electroless nickel.

04

RF and EMI shielding parts

Brass and copper shield cans, cavity blocks and gaskets. Tight flatness on mating faces keeps the shield seated.

05

Manifold and valve blocks

Multi-port blocks with cross-drilled passages. We pressure-test only when the drawing calls for it.

06

Decorative hardware

Knobs, plates, hinges and trim in C27400 or C28000, polished or brushed and clear-coated to stop tarnish.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask before sending brass work

Which brass grade should I specify?

Start with the function. If the part is threaded or turned and strength is not critical, C36000 free-cutting brass gives the best finish and the lowest cycle time.

If the part carries current, switch to C110 or C101 copper. The trade-off is gummy chips, slower feeds and a rougher as-machined surface.

Can you machine thin brass walls without distortion?

Yes, down to about 0.5 mm in free-cutting brass. Thin walls move when the tool pushes, so we leave even stock and take light finishing passes on both sides rather than one heavy cut.

For parts under 0.8 mm wall, expect a longer cycle time. The stock removal has to be staged or the wall bows and the part will not fit.

What tolerance can you actually hold?

±0.005 mm on critical features, measured on a CMM and reported when you ask. General dimensions typically sit inside ±0.01 mm.

Tolerance is not free. A ±0.005 mm bore on a deep small hole costs more than the same bore on a short one. Tell us which features matter and we will concentrate the tight work there.

How fast can I get a quote and parts?

Quotation with DFM analysis comes back within 12 hours of receiving a STEP file or a sample. Production can start within 24 hours of approval.

Parts normally ship in 3–5 days. That depends on quantity, finishing and material availability, so treat it as the planning number rather than a fixed date.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

No. We run one prototype or 10,000+ parts. The setup is the same; only the run time changes.

Small runs still get the same 100% inspection. We do not skip checks because a batch is small.

What surface finishes are available on brass?

As-machined brass sits around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. Fine finishing gets to Ra 0.8–1.6 μm or Ra 0.2–0.8 μm where the drawing needs it.

For appearance parts we offer bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing, plus plating in electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold. Laser marking needs a minimum character height of 1.5 mm.

Will brass parts tarnish in storage or shipping?

Yes. Brass oxidizes in humid air, and parts can arrive discolored if they sit unprotected. We can apply a clear protective treatment before packing.

If the part is plated, tarnish is not a concern on the plated surfaces. Tell us the storage conditions and we will suggest the right protection.

I only have a sample, not a CAD file. Can you still quote?

Yes. Send the sample and we will measure it, build the drawing and quote from that geometry. You get a 3D model back with the price.

This adds a day or two at the front end, but it removes the risk of quoting the wrong geometry.
