CNC Machine 2024: How to Pick a Supplier

A 2024 CNC machine purchase is less about the badge on the spindle and more about what the shop can hold on your part. This guide is for engineers and buyers who need to compare quotes without visiting every factory. Read it and you will know which checks matter, which numbers to ask for, and when a shop is not the right fit.

The verdict on picking a CNC machine 2024 partner

If your part has angled features, thin walls, or a regulated end use, pick a shop with 5-axis capacity, in-house finishing, and the right certification for your sector. For simple prismatic parts, a 3-axis shop with a clean DFM report is the better buy. Send the drawing and we will tell you which one your part is.

Tolerance

What the tolerance number really means for CNC machine 2024

Every supplier page lists a tolerance. The useful question is where that number applies. A shop may hold ±0.005 mm on a 20 mm bore in aluminium and still struggle on a 300 mm steel plate, because thermal growth and tool wear scale with size and cycle time. Ask for the tolerance per feature, not per shop.

On our 5-axis centers we quote ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) on critical features, with surface finish from Ra 0.2–0.8 μm on fine work and Ra 1.6–3.2 μm as-machined. Those ranges assume the drawing defines a datum scheme the machinist can actually use. If the datum is a painted surface or a weld seam, no machine will save the part.

Size changes the answer. A 4,000 mm frame cannot be held to the same band as a 40 mm connector body. For long parts, we hold critical features and let non-critical surfaces float inside a wider band. State which dimensions are functional before quoting, or you will pay for tolerance you do not need.

Material matters too. Aluminium 6061 and 7075 cut clean and hold tight bands. Titanium TC4 and Inconel move more, so we leave stock and take a spring pass. Expect a wider band on the same feature in Inconel than in 6061, even on the same machine.

  • 1
Send a marked drawingCircle the features that must hold ±0.005 mm. Leave the rest general.
  • 2
Name the datumA stable datum scheme removes half the back-and-forth in DFM review.
  • 3
Match finish to functionSealing faces need Ra 0.8–1.6 μm. Brackets rarely need better than Ra 3.2 μm.
Machine mix

Machine mix: why one shop with 127 machines beats three specialists

A part often needs more than one process. A housing may start as a 5-axis milled body, get a turned boss, then go for anodizing. If each step sits in a different shop, you own the logistics and the quality risk between them. One supplier with the full mix keeps the drawing in one quality system.

GreatLight runs 127 high-precision CNC machines across three wholly-owned plants covering 7,600 m². The mix includes 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, 12 four-axis mills, 27 three-axis machines, and 16 mill-turn centers. A Ø400 mm rotary table handles parts that need rotation around a fourth axis.

Travel sizes matter when you sort quotes. Large work goes up to 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm. Medium parts fit 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm or 600 × 600 × 600 mm envelopes. Compact work runs on 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm machines, which are cheaper per hour.

Ask which machine will run your part and how many setups it needs. Two setups on a 3-axis machine can beat one setup on a 5-axis machine for a simple bracket. For an angled port on a curved surface, the 5-axis machine wins on both accuracy and cycle time.

  • 1
Count setups, not axesEvery extra setup adds a datum error and a queue.
  • 2
Check the envelopeA part that fits with 20 mm clearance still needs room for the tool holder.
  • 3
Ask about the second opThe finishing setup decides the final tolerance, not the first one.
Lead time

Lead time, MOQ, and what a quote should contain

Lead time claims are easy to print and hard to verify. Use a shop's own numbers and check them against your schedule. Our quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of a released PO, and parts ship in 3–5 days. Historical late-delivery probability sits below 2%.

MOQ is the other gate. Some shops quote a low unit price and then add setup, programming, and fixture charges that only make sense at 500 pieces. We set no minimum order quantity, so a single prototype and a 10,000+ part run go through the same quote path. That matters when the first article decides whether the design works.

A useful quote lists the machine class, the number of setups, the material grade and cert, the finish spec, the inspection plan, and the ship date. If two quotes differ by 30% on the same drawing, the gap is usually in the finish, the material cert, or the inspection level. Ask which one changed.

Do not accept a unit price without a quantity break. Ask for 1, 50, 500, and 5,000 pieces. The curve tells you where setup cost stops dominating and where the shop expects to amortize tooling. That curve is the real commercial answer.

Certifications

Certifications and inspection: matching the audit to the risk

Certifications are not a score. They are a fit between the shop's quality system and the risk in your product. ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline for any supplier. IATF 16949:2016 fits automotive and EV programs that need PPAP-style discipline. ISO 13485:2016 fits medical devices where process validation and traceability are audited. ISO 27001:2022 covers information security, which matters when your CAD files are the product.

GreatLight holds all four. That does not mean every job needs all four. A robotics bracket does not need medical validation, and paying for it slows the quote. Tell the shop which standard your customer audits against and let them build the inspection plan around it.

Inspection is where the paperwork meets the part. We inspect 100% of parts before shipment, with raw material checks, in-process monitoring, and a final inspection. Reports go out on request. If your incoming inspection is sampling only, ask for the dimensional report with the shipment so the two records match.

For regulated work, ask how nonconforming parts are handled and who signs the deviation. A shop that can describe that flow in two sentences has done it before. A shop that answers with a brochure has not.

Sourcing workflow

Seven steps to qualify a CNC machine 2024 supplier

Run these in order. Each step filters out a class of risk before you spend engineering time.

  • 1
Send the drawing with marked tolerancesInclude material grade, finish spec, and quantity breaks at 1, 50, 500, and 5,000. Mark the features that must hold ±0.005 mm and the datum scheme.
  • 2
Ask for the DFM report with the quoteA useful report flags thin walls under 1.0 mm, deep pockets past 4× tool diameter, and any feature that needs a custom cutter. Expect it within 12 hours.
  • 3
Confirm the machine class and setup countAsk which machine will run the part, its travel envelope, and how many setups. Two setups on a 3-axis machine is fine for a bracket; a 5-axis cycle is better for angled ports and undercuts.
  • 4
Check the material cert chainFor 6061-T6, 7075, 316L, TC4, or Inconel, ask for the mill cert and the heat lot. Without it, a failed part cannot be traced.
  • 5
Agree the finish before the first cutAnodizing, electroless nickel, powder coat, and bead blasting all change dimensions slightly. Set the pre-plate size with the finisher, not after.
  • 6
Lock the inspection planDecide which dimensions get a report and who reviews it. For medical or automotive work, agree the standard before production starts, not at shipment.
  • 7
Start with one part, then scaleRun a single prototype through the same path as production. No MOQ means the first article costs little and proves the process before a 10,000-part run.
FAQs

Questions buyers ask before a CNC machine 2024 order

How do I compare two quotes that differ by 30% on the same drawing?

Look at four lines: material grade and cert, finish spec, inspection level, and number of setups. Most gaps sit there, not in the hourly rate.

If the cheap quote lists a general tolerance and no inspection report, it is pricing a different part than the one you drew.

Can a shop hold ±0.005 mm on a large part?

It depends on the feature and the material. A 4,000 mm frame will not hold that band across every surface, but a critical bore or pocket can.

Mark the functional features and let the rest float in a wider band. That keeps the price sane and the fit correct.

What MOQ should I expect for a prototype?

Zero. If a shop quotes a minimum of 50 or 100 pieces for a prototype, the setup cost is being spread over parts you may not need.

We run from one part to 10,000+ runs through the same quote path, so the first article does not carry a penalty.

Which certifications do I actually need?

ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline. Add IATF 16949:2016 for automotive and EV, ISO 13485:2016 for medical devices, and ISO 27001:2022 when design data security is part of your audit.

Asking for all four on a simple bracket adds cost without reducing risk.

How fast can parts ship after a PO?

Our quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours, production can start within 24 hours, and parts ship in 3–5 days.

Historical late-delivery probability is below 2%. Add time for finishes such as anodizing or plating if your spec calls for them.

What should I send with a request for quote?

A 3D model, a 2D drawing with datums and tolerances, the material grade, the finish spec, and the quantities you expect.

Add the standard your customer audits against. The DFM report will come back faster and with fewer questions.
