5-axis cost guide

Cheap Price 5 Axis CNC Machining Services Producer: How to Read a Low Quote

This page explains where 5-axis machining cost actually comes from and which parts a low quote can honestly cover. It is written for design engineers, hardware startups and sourcing staff who compare quotes from several producers. After reading it you can tell a lean price from a padded one, and you know which questions to ask before releasing a purchase order.

Cost basics

What sets the price of a 5-axis part

Five cost drivers decide almost every 5-axis quote, and only one of them is the hourly rate.

Setup

Setup and programming are charged once, not per part

A cheap price 5 axis quote is usually cheap for one of two reasons. Either the shop removed setup and programming time from the calculation, or it never had that time in the first place because the part is simple enough to run on a 3-axis machine with a fixture. Ask which one applies to your job. The answer changes what you should expect from the first article.

Setup on a simultaneous 5-axis center covers more than clamping. The programmer has to build the CAM model, choose tool axis vectors, verify collision between holder and workpiece, and post a program the operator can trust at 4,000 rpm. On a part with deep pockets, that work can run six to ten hours before the spindle turns. Spread over 500 parts, it disappears. Spread over five parts, it is the whole cost.

This is why the same geometry quoted at one piece and at 500 pieces looks like two different shops. Volume is not the only lever, but it is the fastest one. If your annual demand is under 50 pieces, expect setup to sit visibly in the line items. A producer that hides it is not cheaper. It is just quoting differently.

One-off and prototype runsSetup dominates. Judge the programming hours, not the cycle time.
  • 2
Bridge volumes, 50–500 piecesSetup and cycle time are both visible. Ask for the split.

Machine time

Why simultaneous 5-axis cycle time is not a rounding error

A 3-axis machine removes metal with three linear moves. A simultaneous 5-axis center adds two rotary axes that must stay synchronized with the tool tip, so the control is solving a much larger motion problem every block. Feed rates drop on contoured surfaces, and the post processor decides how smooth the result will be. Roughing a curved pocket may look slow compared to a 3-axis path, and it is.

The payoff shows up in the parts that would otherwise need four setups. A housing with features on five faces, or a port with a compound angle, can be finished in one clamping. Each eliminated setup removes a re-fixture error, an operator hour, and a queue slot. That is where a 5-axis quote can beat a 3-axis quote even at a higher hourly rate.

Cycle time also depends on how the part is held. Thin walls deflect under cutting load, so the programmer slows down or adds supports. A part with a 2 mm wall and a 300 mm span will never run at the feed rate of a solid block. If a quote ignores wall thickness, the price is probably based on the bounding box, not the feature list.

Materials

Material choice moves the price more than the machine does

Aluminium 6061 and 7075 machine fast with sharp tools and good chip evacuation. Stainless 316L work-hardens at the cut, so feeds and speeds need care, and tool life drops. Titanium Ti-6Al-4V is worse: low thermal conductivity keeps heat in the cutting zone, and a 5-axis toolpath that runs fine in aluminium can burn a carbide cutter in titanium within minutes.

Inconel and other nickel alloys sit at the top of the range. They are usually machined at 30 to 50 m/min surface speed, which stretches cycle time and consumes inserts. A cheap price 5 axis quote on Inconel should make you ask how the shop plans to hold tolerance as the tool wears, and whether it has run the alloy before.

Plastics are the opposite problem. POM and PEEK cut easily but move with temperature, so a quote that assumes a cold shop and a warm part will miss dimensions. For thin plastic parts, fixturing and cooling time often cost more than the cutting itself.

Aluminium 6061, 7075Fast cycle, low tool wear. Cheapest group to machine.
  • 2
Stainless 304, 316L, 17-4PHWork hardening and slower feeds raise cycle time.
  • 3
Titanium TC4, InconelLow speeds, short tool life. Expect the highest machining cost.
  • 4
POM, PEEK, ABSEasy to cut, harder to hold. Thermal growth drives the tolerance risk.

What a low price tells you about the shop behind it

Price reflects overhead. A producer running 127 high-precision CNC machines, including 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, carries real fixed cost, but it also spreads programming, inspection and material buying across many jobs. That scale can make a quote lower than a small job shop, not higher. Size alone does not decide the number.

A producer with no inspection step will always look cheaper. Raw material checks, in-process monitoring and a final inspection before shipment cost money and time. We run 100% inspection before shipment and can supply reports on request. If a quote does not mention inspection, ask what happens between the last cut and the shipping box.

Payment terms and quantity breaks matter too. No minimum order quantity means a single prototype and a 10,000-piece run go through the same front door, but the unit price will not be the same. A quote that offers one flat price at every quantity is guessing.

Comparison

Quoting the same part to three producers

Send identical drawings, material spec, tolerance callouts and finish requirement to each producer. If one quote comes back at half the others, do not assume the other two are overpriced. Compare what each one included: material certificate, finish, inspection, packaging, and whether the price is per piece or per batch.

A useful habit is to ask for a DFM note with the quote. A shop that reviews the model and suggests a change, such as opening a pocket radius or relaxing a tolerance that does not affect function, is telling you it read the part. A quote with no comments and a low number may simply be a number.

We return a quotation and a free DFM analysis within 12 hours, and production can start within 24 hours once drawings and material are confirmed. That speed is part of the price. Waiting three days for a quote costs an engineer time, and that time has a cost even if it never appears on an invoice.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask about 5-axis pricing

Can a low price and tight tolerance coexist?

Yes, within limits. Our standard tolerance is ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in), and that is achievable on a rigid setup with a stable material. The cost driver is not the tolerance number alone, it is how many features carry it and how the part is held.

A single bore at ±0.005 mm is routine. Twelve bores at that tolerance across five faces, on a thin wall, is a different job. Expect the quote to reflect the inspection time as much as the cutting time.

Why is my 5-axis quote higher than my 3-axis quote for the same part?

Because 5-axis is not automatically cheaper. It wins when it removes setups, shortens the tool, or reaches a feature a 3-axis machine cannot. If the part already fits in three setups and has no compound angles, a 3-axis or 4-axis quote is often the honest answer.

We will tell you when a part belongs on a 3-axis machine. That keeps the price low for the right reasons instead of selling machine time you do not need.

How does material buying affect the price?

Small quantities of titanium or Inconel carry a minimum mill order, and cut charges apply. If your part uses a few kilograms of a specialty alloy, material can be a larger share of the quote than machining.

For aluminium and common stainless grades, stock is usually on hand and the material line stays predictable. Tell us if you can accept an equivalent grade, and we will say whether it changes the price.

What do you need to give an accurate quote?

A 3D model in STEP or IGES, a 2D drawing with tolerance and finish callouts, the material grade, and the quantity. A target date helps us sequence the job but is not required for pricing.

If you only have a model and no drawing, we can still quote. General tolerances will apply, and we will flag any feature where the model alone is ambiguous.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs. The unit price changes with quantity because setup amortizes, but there is no gate you have to pass to place an order.

For a single prototype, expect the setup and programming lines to be visible. That is normal and it is the honest way to quote low volumes.

How do you handle confidential drawings?

Uploads are secure and confidential, and we can sign an NDA on request before you send files. Many customers send an NDA first and drawings second, which works fine for us.

If your program has export-control or customer-name restrictions, say so in the first email. We will keep the part referenced by number rather than by program name.
