Where programs slip

Four problems that delay a parts program

Most failures here are not machining failures. They are handoff failures.

01

The drawing goes quiet

You send a STEP file and a PDF. Two weeks pass with no review, no questions, no quote. Tooling gets ordered late and the build date moves. A DFM pass on day one usually catches the two or three features that drive cost before the design freezes.

02

Fits change at assembly

Machined housings arrive in tolerance, but the mating bracket is bent past spec and the bolt holes will not line up. Sourcing the two from different shops means nobody owns the stack-up. One supplier for both keeps the interface accountable.

03

Minimum order kills the pilot

Your pilot build needs 12 pieces. The shop quotes 500 or nothing, so you pay for inventory you will redesign in six weeks. Small runs should be priced as small runs, with the per-piece cost dropping when the design is stable.

04

The quality report never arrives

Parts show up with no material cert and no dimensional record. Incoming inspection rejects a batch, and you have no traceability to argue the call. Ask for the inspection report before the purchase order, not after the rejection.

How we run it

One supplier from drawing to assembled parts

Engineering support, machining and finishing under one roof, so the drawing questions get answered before the spindle starts.

Engineering support

DFM before the first cut

Send a 2D drawing, a 3D model or a sketch with dimensions. Our engineers review it for wall thickness, corner radii, thread depth, datum choice and feature access, then send the markup with the quote. You get a list of what is expensive and what is not, which is more useful than a number alone.

The review happens within 12 hours, and production can start within 24 hours of approval. If a tolerance is tighter than the function needs, we say so. Holding ±0.005 mm across a whole part when only a bearing bore needs it is a cost you can avoid.

Batch production

One piece or ten thousand, same setup discipline

There is no minimum order quantity. A single prototype runs on the same machines as a 10,000-piece order, with the same in-process checks. For repeat work, we hold the setup sheet, fixture and program so batch two matches batch one without re-quoting from scratch.

We run 16 simultaneous 5-axis centers, 16 mill-turn centers and 27 three-axis machines, with a maximum processing size of 4,000 mm. That covers a 400 mm rotary-table job and a long extrusion in the same week without sending either outside.

Choosing a process

Which process fits the part in front of you

The right answer depends on quantity, geometry and how final the design is.

What we make

Services behind a parts order

Mix them in one purchase order. One inspection record covers the lot.

01

5-axis CNC machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers for impellers, brackets and housings with angled faces. One setup reaches five sides, which removes the re-fixturing error that shows up as a hole pattern that will not bolt up.

02

CNC milling and turning

27 three-axis machines, 12 four-axis mills and 16 mill-turn centers. Turning covers shafts and bushings up to Ø400 mm on the rotary table, with milling of flats and cross holes in the same cycle.

03

Sheet metal fabrication

Laser cutting, forming and welding for enclosures, chassis and mounting plates. Good fit for 1.5 mm to 6 mm steel and aluminium where the part is mostly flat with a few bends.

04

Custom 3D printing

SLA and FDM for form-and-fit checks before committing to tooling. Useful when the geometry has internal channels that a cutter cannot reach, or when you need a handling model next week.

05

Surface finishing

Anodizing, plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting and laser marking. Laser marking holds a minimum character height of 1.5 mm, so plan part numbers accordingly.

06

Assembly and kitting

We fit inserts, hardware and sub-components, then pack to your kit list. One part number arrives instead of nine, and the assembly stack-up stays with the shop that machined the interfaces.

Why GreatLight

Six things you can check before ordering

15Y

Machining since 2011

Fifteen years of OEM work across aerospace, medical, automotive and industrial machinery. The process sheets come from parts that already shipped, not from a brochure.

±0.005

Millimeters, verified

Tight limits are held on the features that need them and measured on a CMM. You get the numbers, not a claim that the part is accurate.

99.99%

Qualification rate

Raw material check, in-process monitoring and final inspection before anything leaves. Every lot is inspected 100 percent, with reports on request.

0

Minimum order quantity

One prototype or 10,000 pieces. Small runs are priced as small runs, so a pilot build does not turn into dead inventory.

12h

Quote and DFM turnaround

Quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of approval, and parts ship in 3–5 days.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask before the first order

What file formats do you need for a quote?

A STEP or IGES model plus a 2D PDF with tolerances and finish callouts is the fastest combination. If you only have a sketch, send it with key dimensions and the function of the part.

We review it and come back with questions rather than guessing at a critical feature.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

No. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs on the same machines.

Small batches carry a higher per-piece cost because setup is spread over fewer parts, and we show that in the quote instead of hiding it in a lot charge.

How tight a tolerance can you actually hold?

±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) is achievable, but it should be applied per feature, not across the whole drawing.

If a bore locates a bearing, that feature earns the tight limit. A clearance hole 40 mm away does not, and tightening it adds cost with no benefit.

Can you machine and form parts in the same order?

Yes. Machined brackets and sheet metal panels can ship as one kit, which keeps the interface between them under one inspection record.

That matters when a bend radius or a hole position crosses between the two processes.

What surface finishes are available?

Anodizing in clear, colour, hardcoat and conductive grades, plus electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing.

Laser marking is available with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm.

How do you handle confidentiality?

Uploads are secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request before you send drawings.

ISO 27001:2022 covers our information handling, which is often a requirement for medical and defense-adjacent programs.

What inspection documentation comes with the parts?

Raw material check, in-process monitoring and final inspection happen on every lot, and every part is inspected 100 percent before shipment.

Dimensional reports and material certificates are available on request. Ask for them at the quote stage so they are built into the price.

When should I use 3D printing instead of CNC?

Printing wins when the geometry has internal channels a cutter cannot reach, or when you need a handling model next week and the material is not final.

For anything that carries load, holds a thread or sees heat, machined metal is the safer route.
