Titanium Aluminum Steel Machining

We machine mechanical OEM parts in titanium, aluminum and steel on 127 CNC machines. Tight tolerances, one-off prototypes through 10,000+ part runs, DFM feedback before the first cut.

Where it goes wrong

Four problems that show up after the drawing is released

01

Titanium burns tools and the part moves

Ti-6Al-4V conducts heat poorly, so the cutting edge takes the load. Run it at aluminum speeds and you scrap tools, then scrap the part. Thin walls deflect, holes close up, and the second op has nothing left to hold.

02

Aluminum 6061 and 7075 treated as one material

They behave nothing alike. 7075 cuts clean at high spindle speed but cracks at a sharp inside corner. 6061 galls on a dull tap. Same program, two outcomes, and the difference only shows up at inspection.

03

Steel hardness discovered too late

4140 arrives pre-hardened at 28–32 HRC and the roughing cycle is already written for annealed stock. Cycle time doubles, the insert life halves, and the delivery date slips before anyone calls you.

04

Prototype fits, production does not

A turned sample passes hand fit at the bench. Ten thousand pieces later the bores drift, threads pull, and the mating shaft no longer seats. Nothing changed in the drawing, only the process control.

How we run these parts

Different metals, different cutting strategies

The alloy decides the tool, the speed and the order of operations. Not the other way around.

Titanium

Titanium parts machined without cooking the edge

Titanium moves heat into the tool instead of the chip. We hold it down with high-pressure coolant, climb milling and conservative radial engagement, then take the finishing pass at a fixed depth so the surface stays consistent across the batch.

TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) and commercially pure TA1 and TA2 cover most of what our customers send. Five-axis positioning lets us reach the pockets on a single setup, which matters on parts with a thin flange and two bored bosses on different axes.

Aluminum and steel

Aluminum for volume, steel where it has to hold

Aluminum is where we run the fastest cycles. 6061-T6 and 6082 turn and mill at high spindle speed with good chip evacuation, so a housing or a manifold block comes off the mill in one shift. 7075 goes to structural brackets and anything that has to take a load without growing.

Steel is a different conversation. 1018 and 1045 are straightforward. 4130 and 4140 need the heat-treat route planned before the first cut, and 4340 or tool steel need the right insert grade from the start. If a part must be hardened after machining, we leave the stock allowance and grind back to size.

What we do

Machining services for mechanical OEM parts

01

5-axis CNC machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers for contoured faces, angled holes and parts that need one setup instead of four.

02

CNC milling and turning

Three-, four- and five-axis milling plus turn-mill work on shafts, housings and threaded bodies.

03

Rapid prototyping

One piece to a few dozen, machined from the production alloy so the test result means something.

04

Sheet metal fabrication

Brackets, panels and enclosures when the part is formed rather than cut from solid.

05

Die casting and vacuum casting

Aluminum die casting for volume housings; vacuum casting for low-run plastic covers.

06

Surface finishing

Anodizing, plating, powder coating, blasting and laser marking, in-house or through qualified partners.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask before sending a drawing

Which titanium grade should I specify for a machined bracket?

TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) if the part carries load or sees elevated temperature. Commercially pure TA1 or TA2 if you only need corrosion resistance and formability, and the strength requirement is modest.

Both machine more slowly than aluminum. Expect lower feed rates and more attention to tool wear, especially in deep pockets where chip evacuation is difficult.

Can you hold ±0.005 mm on aluminum parts as well as steel?

Yes, but the feature matters more than the material. A bored bore or a faced shoulder at that tolerance is routine. A long thin wall in 6061 will move with temperature and clamping force, so we usually discuss which dimensions are functional and which are nominal.

We inspect critical features in-process and again before shipment. Reports are available on request.

What happens to a part that needs heat treatment after machining?

We machine with a controlled stock allowance, send the part for heat treatment, then finish to size, often by grinding. Hardened 4140 or 4340 cannot be finished with the same tooling used on annealed stock.

If the hardness is specified on the drawing, tell us at quote stage. It changes the routing, the cycle time and the inspection plan.

Do you accept one-off prototypes?

Yes. There is no minimum order quantity, and the same machines run prototypes and production. A single part and a 10,000-piece run go through the same first-article checks on the features that matter.

Prototypes are usually machined from the production alloy so the fit and finish test is meaningful.

How do you handle thin walls and small features in titanium?

We leave support material in the blank until the final operation, then remove it in a sequence that keeps the part rigid. Climb milling with light radial engagement reduces the cutting force that pushes a thin wall away from the tool.

On five-axis parts we also choose the setup so the thin section is supported by the fixture, not by hand.

What surface finishes can you apply after machining?

Anodizing in clear, color, hardcoat and conductive types; electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating; powder coating and black oxide; bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing.

Laser marking is available with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm.

How do you keep drawings and models confidential?

Uploads are handled as confidential, and we sign an NDA on request before any file review. ISO 27001:2022 covers how we manage that data internally.

If your program requires it, we can restrict the drawing to the engineers who quote and program the part.

What do you need to quote a mechanical OEM part?

A 3D model or a dimensioned drawing, the material and finish, and the quantity. If a tolerance is functional, say so, because it decides the machine and the inspection method.

We return a quotation and a DFM analysis within 12 hours.
