How to Vet a Chinese CNC Machining Parts Supplier

Engineers and sourcing teams use this guide to pick a Chinese CNC machining parts supplier for prototypes through production. It covers the five checks that separate a real partner from a trading desk: tolerance capability, lead time claims, MOQ, certifications, and how quotes are written. Read it before you send an RFQ.

Key takeaways

Verify tolerance on a real partA ±0.005 mm claim means nothing without a CMM report and a first article inspection you can read.
Match machine count to part geometry16 simultaneous 5-axis centers and 16 mill-turn centers handle complex parts; 27 three-axis machines handle simpler prismatic work.
Treat MOQ as a signalRuns from one prototype to 10,000+ pieces tell you whether the shop is tooled for your volume.
Ask which certificates cover your partsISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 and ISO 27001 each apply to different programs.
Read the quote line by lineMaterial grade, finish spec, inspection level and shipping terms should all be printed, not implied.

Choose on evidence, not on price alone

Pick the Chinese CNC machining parts supplier that shows CMM data, names its machines, states its MOQ and prints its inspection level. A low quote without those details costs more after the first rework.

Check 1

Tolerance claims need evidence, not adjectives

Every shop advertises tight tolerance. Few will show you the measurement that proves it. When you evaluate a Chinese CNC machining parts supplier, ask for a CMM report from a part with similar geometry to yours. A thin wall, a deep pocket or a long bore behaves differently than a simple block, and the report should come from the hard case, not the easy one.

The number to compare against is ±0.005 mm. That is achievable on 5-axis work when the shop controls thermal drift, tool wear and fixture rigidity. If your part has a 0.05 mm flatness callout across a 300 mm face, ask how they hold it. The answer usually involves stress-relieved stock and a semi-finish pass before the final cut.

Watch for tolerance stacking on multi-feature parts. A position callout of Ø0.05 mm MMC can absorb some variation, but only if the shop understands the datum scheme. Shops that redraw your datums without asking are a warning sign.

Finish matters as much as size. Standard machined surfaces land at Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. Sealing faces, bearing bores and optical mounts often need Ra 0.8–1.6 μm or better. Ask which of your faces will be finished by cutter choice alone and which need a second operation.

  • 1
Ask for CMM data on a hard partNot a sample block. Same wall thickness, same depth-to-diameter ratio.
  • 2
Confirm the datum schemeIf they change datums, they change your stack-up.
  • 3
Separate cosmetic from functional facesFinish cost belongs on the faces that matter.
Check 2

Lead time depends on machine availability, not promises

Quotes often say four weeks. The real question is which machine your part runs on and whether that spindle is booked. A shop with 127 high-precision CNC machines has more scheduling room than one with twelve. Ask what happens if your part needs a second setup on a 5-axis center that is already committed.

Fast quoting is a useful signal. A quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours means someone read your file, flagged thin features and suggested a toolpath. Production start within 24 hours is realistic when material is in stock and fixtures are simple.

Shipping in 3–5 days fits prototypes and bridge orders. It does not fit a 10,000-piece run that needs its own fixture plate and first-article approval. Historical late-delivery probability below 2% is a shop-level number, not a guarantee for your specific order.

Ask for the milestone dates: DFM feedback, material receipt, first article, production, inspection, ship. If a quote gives only one date, you cannot tell where the risk sits.

  • 1
Map part features to machines5-axis, mill-turn or 3-axis. Each has a different queue.
  • 2
Ask for milestone datesOne ship date hides the schedule.
  • 3
Check material lead time separately7075 and Ti-6Al-4V stock moves slower than 6061.
Check 3

MOQ tells you how the shop is tooled

A supplier that quotes a 500-piece minimum is tooled for volume. That is not wrong, but it means your 20-piece pilot will wait behind a production run. A shop that runs from one prototype to 10,000+ pieces keeps both a prototype cell and production cells. You get a real price at both ends.

No minimum order quantity is common in Dongguan because the supply base is dense. Fixture plates, soft jaws and tooling can be sourced the same week. The trade-off is that very small orders may carry a setup charge. Ask how it is calculated and whether it drops on the second order.

Volume changes the process, not just the price. At 50 pieces, soft jaws and a vise are fine. At 5,000 pieces, a dedicated fixture and an in-process gauge pay for themselves. A good supplier will tell you where the break-even sits for your part.

If a quote refuses to state a minimum, treat that as an incomplete quote. You need to know whether the price holds at 1 piece, 100 pieces and 10,000 pieces.

  • 1
Ask for three price breaks1, 100 and 10,000 pieces. Watch how the curve flattens.
  • 2
Confirm setup chargesOne-time or per-order. Get it in writing.
  • 3
Match process to volumeSoft jaws at low volume, hard fixtures at high volume.
Check 4

Certifications only matter if they cover your program

Four certificates show up again and again: ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. They are not interchangeable. ISO 9001 is the baseline quality system. IATF 16949 adds automotive traceability and PPAP discipline. ISO 13485 brings medical device process control. ISO 27001 covers how your CAD files and drawings are protected.

Ask which certificate applies to the cell that will run your parts, not just to the company name. A shop can hold IATF 16949 and still run your prototype in a job shop cell outside that scope. For automotive or medical work, that distinction decides whether your parts are traceable.

For defense, medical and consumer electronics programs, file security is part of the audit. Uploads are secure and confidential, and an NDA is available on request. Confirm who can open your files, where they are stored and when they are deleted.

Certificates expire and get suspended. Check the issue date and the certification body. A scanned PDF from 2019 is not evidence of a current system.

  • 1
Match cert to industryAutomotive needs IATF 16949. Medical needs ISO 13485.
  • 2
Check the scope statementThe cert must name the process and site that runs your part.
  • 3
Verify the issue dateCurrent certificates, not archived scans.

Read the quote as a manufacturing plan

A useful quote names the material grade, the stock form, the finish spec, the inspection level and the shipping terms. If it says aluminium without saying 6061-T6 or 7075, the price is a placeholder. Grade changes cutting speed, tool life and sometimes the machine.

Finishes should be spelled out too. Anodizing comes in clear, colour, hardcoat and conductive types. Plating options include electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold. Powder coating and black oxide cover different corrosion and wear needs. Laser marking has a minimum character height of 1.5 mm, which matters on small parts.

Inspection language is where weak quotes hide. 100% inspection before shipment, with raw material check, in-process monitoring and final inspection, is a specific commitment. Reports on request is a weaker one. Ask which one you are buying.

Finally, check the material list against your drawing. Shops that stock 6061, 304, 316L, 17-4PH, Ti-6Al-4V and PEEK can quote more of your BOM without a sourcing detour. Shops that list only mild steel will subcontract, and subcontracting adds days and hides the process.

  • 1
Demand grade and temper6061-T6 and 6061 are not the same quote.
  • 2
Name the finish specType, thickness and colour, not just anodized.
  • 3
Define inspection level100% before shipment or sample-based.
RFQ workflow

Step by step: run a supplier trial

A low-risk sequence that tests capability before you commit volume.

  • 1
Send a DFM-ready packageInclude STEP file, 2D drawing with GD&T, material grade, finish spec and target volume. A complete package gets a quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours.
  • 2
Review the DFM notesLook for flagged thin walls under 0.8 mm, deep pockets over 4× diameter, and tolerances tighter than ±0.005 mm. Good feedback names a specific feature, not a general comment.
  • 3
Order one piece firstNo minimum order quantity means you can test with a single part. Ask for the CMM report and a surface roughness value on the critical faces.
  • 4
Check the first article against CADCompare the CMM data to the model. A 3D scan overlay showing CAD-to-part deviation is more useful than a pass/fail stamp.
  • 5
Run a 20 to 50 piece bridge orderThis exposes setup repeatability, finish consistency and packing quality. Production start within 24 hours is possible if material is in stock.
  • 6
Audit the certificates and NDAConfirm ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 or ISO 27001 applies to your cell, and that an NDA covers your files.
  • 7
Scale to production volumeMove to 10,000+ piece runs once first-article and bridge orders meet print. Expect parts to ship in 3–5 days on repeat orders.
FAQs

Supplier selection questions

How do I verify a ±0.005 mm tolerance claim?

Ask for a CMM report from a part with similar geometry, not a simple test block. The report should list the critical features, the nominal, the actual and the deviation.

Cross-check the datum scheme against your drawing. If the shop redefined datums, the reported deviation may not reflect your stack-up.

What certifications should a Chinese CNC machining parts supplier hold?

ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline. Add IATF 16949:2016 for automotive, ISO 13485:2016 for medical devices, and ISO 27001:2022 when file security is part of your audit.

Check that the certificate scope names the site and process that will run your parts. A company-level certificate does not always cover every cell.

Is there a minimum order quantity for prototypes?

Not at every shop. Some run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs with no minimum order quantity.

Small orders may carry a setup charge for fixtures and programming. Ask how it is calculated and whether it is waived on repeat orders.

How fast can parts ship from China?

Quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours is realistic for a complete RFQ package. Production can start within 24 hours when material is in stock.

Simple orders ship in 3–5 days. Larger runs with dedicated fixtures and first-article approval take longer, so ask for milestone dates rather than one ship date.

Which materials and finishes are commonly available?

Aluminium 6061, 6061-T6, 2024, 5052, 5083, 6063, 6082, 7075 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316, 316L, 420, 430, 431, 440C and 17-4PH; plus titanium, Inconel, magnesium and engineering plastics such as POM, PEEK and PC.

Finishes include anodizing, electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting, polishing and laser marking with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm.

How do I protect my design files?

Use a supplier with secure uploads and a signed NDA before you share production drawings. ISO 27001:2022 is the relevant information security certificate.

Ask who can open the files, where they are stored and when they are deleted after the order closes.
