Supply chain recovery

5 Ways to Recover from a Major Supply Chain Disruption

When a plant goes down, the recovery clock starts the same hour. Here are five ways recover from a major supply chain disruption on the shop floor, with the trade-offs each one carries.

Where recovery stalls

The four points where a recovery plan usually breaks

Most plans fail on the same four points. Check which one you are sitting on right now.

01

Is the second site able to run your parts at all?

A backup supplier in a spreadsheet is not capacity. If the alternate plant has no machine of the right size, no fixture, and no operator who has cut that material, restart takes weeks. A 4,000 mm part cannot move to a 500 mm machine.

02

Is quoting the bottleneck rather than machining?

Every day spent waiting for a price is a day the spindle is not turning. When the original supplier is down, a two-week quote cycle on a 300-piece run costs more than the parts themselves.

03

Are you re-cutting parts because the drawing was never reviewed?

Thin walls, deep pockets, and tight corner radii are where rework starts. If nobody flagged the 0.5 mm wall or the 12:1 bore before the first cut, you pay for it twice: once in scrap, once in the schedule.

04

Can you prove the parts are good when they land?

Recovery parts often arrive with no inspection record, no material certificate, and no finish data. On a medical or automotive line, that means incoming inspection holds the lot, and the line stops again.

How we work

Five recovery levers we can pull without a new contract

Each lever maps to one failure point above.

CNC Lathe Technical Specifications Terminology
Lever 1–2

Two live sites and a 12-hour quote instead of a promise

We operate 3 wholly-owned plants with 7,600 m² of floor space and 127 high-precision CNC machines, including 16 simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, 12 four-axis mills, 27 three-axis machines, and 16 mill-turn centers. When one site is blocked, work can move to another site that already has the same machine class and the same fixturing approach. Maximum processing size is 4,000 mm, so large parts do not need to be split into weldments just to fit a machine.

Quoting is the first gate, not the last. Send a STEP file and drawings, and you get a quotation plus a free DFM analysis within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of approval. Parts ship in 3–5 days. We do not promise a date we cannot hold, and the historical late-delivery probability is below 2%.

Material and process control that survives an audit

Recovery runs often switch material at the last minute. We machine aluminium 6061, 6061-T6, 2024, 5052, 5083, 6063, 6082, 7075, and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316, 316L, 420, 430, 431, 440C, and 17-4PH; steel 1018, 1045, 4130, 4140, 4340, A36, and tool steel; copper and brass C101, C103, C110, beryllium copper, C27400, C28000, C36000; titanium TA1, TA2, TC4, Inconel, and magnesium AZ31B / AZ91D; plus engineering plastics including POM, PEEK, PA, PC, ABS, PMMA, and carbon fibre.

Finishing is handled in the same flow: anodizing in clear, colour, hardcoat, and conductive; electroless nickel, zinc, silver, and gold plating; powder coating and black oxide; bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, and polishing; laser marking down to 1.5 mm character height. Qualification rate is 99.99%, and every lot is inspected 100% before shipment.

Choosing a route

Which recovery route fits which part

Match the part to the route before you commit tooling time.

Services

What we can take on during a recovery run

One card per service. Pick the one that matches the part family.

01

5 Axis CNC Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers for parts that need five faces in one setup. Used on impellers, brackets, and housings with angled features.

02

CNC Milling & Turning

Three- and four-axis mills plus mill-turn centers. The workhorse route for plates, shafts, and bushings from 1 to 10,000+ pieces.

03

Rapid Prototyping

Bridge parts while the main tool is still being cut. Useful when the line is down and you need something functional this week.

04

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Enclosures, brackets, and panels. Often the cheaper route when the part is a formed shell rather than a solid machined block.

05

Custom 3D Printing

For fixtures, jigs, and low-stress covers. Not a substitute for a machined load-bearing part.

06

Metal Die Casting

Higher volumes where a cast blank plus finish machining beats cutting from solid. Tooling lead time applies.

FAQs

Questions buyers ask during a disruption

How fast can you quote a recovery job?

Send a STEP file and 2D drawings through the quote page. You get a quotation and a free DFM analysis within 12 hours.

If the drawing has an issue that would cause scrap, we tell you in that same reply instead of after the first cut.

Can production really start in 24 hours?

Production can start within 24 hours of approval when material is in stock and the drawing is released.

If the material is not in stock, that is the long pole, not the machining. We will tell you which one is holding the date.

What is the largest part you can machine?

Maximum processing size is 4,000 mm, with a travel of 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm on the large-format mills.

Medium travel covers 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm and 600 × 600 × 600 mm. Compact travel covers 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

No minimum order quantity. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs.

Single pieces are common during a disruption, when you need one bracket to keep a test rig running.

How do you handle a part that needs both machining and finishing?

Machining and surface finishing run in the same flow: anodizing, plating, powder coating, black oxide, bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, polishing, and laser marking.

Keeping both steps in house removes a freight leg and a second queue, which is usually where recovery schedules slip.

What inspection data comes with the parts?

Every lot is inspected 100% before shipment. That covers raw material check, in-process monitoring, and final inspection.

Inspection reports are available on request, which matters for medical and automotive incoming inspection.

Can you work under an NDA?

Yes. Uploads are secure and confidential, and an NDA is available on request.

If your recovery job involves a design you have not released publicly, send the NDA first and we will sign before files move.

When is 5-axis the wrong choice for a recovery run?

When the part is a simple plate or shaft. A three-axis mill or a lathe will finish it faster and cheaper.

Five-axis earns its place when one setup removes several stacked operations, or when the geometry cannot be reached otherwise.

Upload your files and we will come back with a price, a DFM note, and a realistic start date.
