Quoting workflow

Benefits of CNC Quotation Software for Custom Parts

This page explains how automated quoting turns a 3D model and 2D drawing into a priced, manufacturable response, and what that changes for design engineers and sourcing teams. It covers the cost drivers the software reads, the data it needs from you, and the cases where a human estimator still has to step in. Read it before your next RFQ cycle.

What CNC Quotation Software Actually Calculates

A quoting system is not a price list. It reads your STEP file, measures the part, and builds a machining plan from stored rules. Stock size comes from the bounding box plus allowance. Removal volume drives roughing passes. Feature recognition picks out holes, pockets, threads, and undercuts. Then the software multiplies cycle time by the machine hourly rate that applies to that specific spindle.

The rate matters more than most engineers expect. A three-axis mill, a mill-turn center, and a simultaneous 5-axis machining center carry different hourly costs, and the setup time differs just as much. When quoting software has machine-specific profiles, a part routed to the wrong class of machine shows up as an obviously wrong number instead of a silent loss.

Material is the second large driver. The database holds density, machinability rating, and bar or plate cost per kilogram for aluminium 6061-T6, 7075, stainless 316L, 17-4PH, Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel, and engineering plastics such as POM and PEEK. Machinability rating changes the feed and speed the plan assumes, which changes cycle time. A part in Inconel is not simply a more expensive 6061 part.

The output is a cost breakdown, not one lump figure. You see material, machining time, setup, finishing, and inspection lines. That structure is what lets you argue with the number in a useful way.

Speed Changes How You Use the Quote

When a quote takes two days, you send one design. When it takes hours, you send three. Engineers iterate differently under that condition. You can compare a 6061-T6 version against a 7075 version, or check whether a 0.5 mm wall change removes a second setup, before the design review rather than after it.

The practical gain is not the hours saved on paperwork. It is that costing moves earlier in the design cycle, when changes are still cheap. A quote returned with DFM notes at the same time lets you fix a tool-access problem before the model is frozen.

Some limits are worth stating. Automated quoting handles prismatic parts, turned parts, and plate work well. It handles a large weldment with twenty sub-components poorly, because the plan depends on fixturing decisions that no feature recognizer can settle. For those jobs, expect a manual quote with a longer turnaround. That is not a software failure. It is the correct routing.

Reading the Cost Breakdown

A quote line that says machining is 62 percent of the price tells you the geometry is the problem, not the material. A quote where material dominates tells you to look at stock form or switch alloy. This is the reason a breakdown is more useful than a single number, and why we return one even on simple parts.

Setup is the line engineers most often overlook. Two setups on a three-axis machine can cost more than the same part run on a 5-axis center in one operation, even though the 5-axis hourly rate is higher. The crossover depends on part size and how many faces need work. Quoting software with accurate machine profiles finds that crossover for you instead of leaving it to a guess.

Tool wear and small-feature penalties also appear. A Ø1 mm end mill in a deep pocket runs at reduced feed and breaks more often than a Ø6 mm cutter in the same material. If your design uses a lot of small deep features, that cost is real and it will show in the cycle time rather than in a separate line item.

What the System Needs From Your File

A clean STEP file carries most of the load. Native CAD is welcome, but STEP AP214 avoids translation surprises. Send the 2D drawing as well when tolerances, surface finish, or threads are not fully defined in the model. A model with no tolerance callouts gets quoted at general machining tolerance, which is ±0.005 mm on our machines but may not be what your assembly needs.

Thread callouts should be explicit. M6 × 1 or 1/4-20 UNC, not a cosmetic hole. Material and finish should be stated per part, not per project, because mixed orders are common and a single line covering ten parts invites error.

Quantity affects routing. A single prototype and a 10,000-piece run are not the same job. The software can price both, but the plan behind each number differs. Telling us the target volume at RFQ time, even if you only need one piece now, gets you a quote that reflects the intended production path.

Uploads stay confidential. We can work under NDA when your program requires it.

FAQs

CNC Quotation Software Questions

Does automated quoting give a lower price than a manual quote?

Not automatically. The price reflects material, machine time, setup, and finishing. What automation changes is consistency and speed, not the underlying cost.

On simple prismatic parts, the two methods usually land close. The gap appears on repeat parts, where an automated system reuses the same rules and avoids re-estimation drift.

Which file format works best?

STEP AP214 is the safest choice for 3D. Add a PDF drawing when tolerances, finishes, or thread standards are not modeled.

If you send native CAD, we will translate it, but check the model after translation if the part has tight geometry.

Can the software quote a 5-axis part correctly?

Yes, when the machine profiles include 5-axis kinematics. The plan accounts for tool orientation, reach, and whether the part fits the rotary table.

For very large parts, the travel limits decide the routing. Our largest platform handles 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm, and the rotary table is Ø400 mm.

What if my part is a weldment or assembly?

It will usually be routed to a manual quote. Feature recognition struggles with multi-part fixtures and weld sequencing.

Expect a longer turnaround for those jobs. Send the assembly drawing and a bill of materials to speed it up.

How do tolerances affect the quoted price?

Tighter tolerances reduce cutting parameters and add inspection time. A ±0.005 mm band on a critical bore is a different job from the same bore at ±0.05 mm.

Specify tolerance only where the function needs it. Blanket tight tolerances on a whole drawing raise cost with no benefit.

Can I get DFM notes with the quote?

Yes. We return a free DFM analysis alongside the quotation, covering tool access, wall thickness, and features that would raise cost.

Acting on those notes before you freeze the design is where most of the savings come from.
