Cheap China CNC Machining: Where the Money Goes

A working guide for engineers and buyers who compare quotes from Chinese machine shops. It covers what drives the price down, which tolerance and inspection levels survive a low quote, and when a cheap part is the wrong part.

Overview

How to read a low CNC quote

Price is an output, not an input. Four things set it.

Cost structure

What actually makes China CNC machining cheap

A low quote is rarely a discount. It comes from machine hours, setup, material, and how much inspection the job gets. In Dongguan, shop rates are lower than in Germany or the US, but the bigger gap comes from volume: a supplier running 127 machines can put your part on the right machine instead of forcing it onto the only one available.

Setup is the second lever. A three-axis job with one face and loose tolerances takes minutes to fixture. A five-axis job with datums on six sides can take a full shift before the first chip. If two quotes differ by 40 percent, the difference is usually here, not in the hourly rate.

Material is the third. Aluminum 6061 is cheap and cuts fast. 17-4PH stainless and Inconel are not. When a quote looks too low for the alloy you specified, ask which grade the shop planned to buy. Substituting 303 for 316L is common and hard to spot after anodizing.

Inspection is the last lever and the easiest to cut. A quote with no first-article report and no final dimensional record is cheaper because nobody measures the parts. You only find out at assembly.

Fit and limits

Which parts suit low-cost CNC, and which do not

Cheap CNC works when the part is small or medium, has a modest feature count, and does not need every surface ground. Brackets, housings, manifolds, heat sinks, fixture plates, and prototype enclosures all fall into this group. On a 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm machine, most of these run in one or two setups.

Tolerance is the dividing line. Our standard window is ±0.005 mm (0.0002 in) on critical features, and that is achievable on a low-cost job if the drawing is clear about which dimensions matter. When every dimension carries the same tight tolerance, the shop has to hold all of them, and the price climbs for dimensions that do not affect function.

Some geometry does not belong on a cheap quote. Deep pockets with a high depth-to-width ratio need long reach tools that deflect, so the shop cuts slowly. Thin walls under 0.8 mm on aluminum move during clamping. Hardened tool steel above 45 HRC needs a different process window and more inserts.

Surface finish follows the same logic. Ra 1.6–3.2 μm as machined is the default. Ra 0.2–0.8 μm means slower passes, smaller stepovers, and often a second operation. If the finish is cosmetic only, say so. We can keep the functional faces tight and let the rest run free.

How to brief a shop so the cheap quote stays cheap

The fastest way to kill a low price is a drawing that hides the real requirement. Send a STEP file plus a PDF with a clear tolerance block, the datum scheme, and a note on which surfaces are functional. If a dimension is reference only, mark it. The shop stops guessing and the quote stops carrying contingency.

State the material properly: 6061-T6, not 'aluminum'. State the temper, because 6061-T6 and 6061-O machine and behave differently. For stainless, 303 cuts freely, 304 work-hardens, and 316L is for corrosion. Same word, three prices.

Tell us the quantity and the stage. One prototype and a 10,000-part run are different quotes. We have no minimum order quantity, so a single piece is fine, but the per-part price reflects setup spread over one unit. If a pilot run of 50 is coming, say it up front.

Ask for the DFM note. Our quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours, and production can start within 24 hours after you approve. The DFM note often removes a tight tolerance or a deep pocket and drops the price without touching function.

Say what the part does. A bracket on a robot arm and a bracket on a shipping crate look the same in CAD. Knowing the load, the environment, and the mating parts lets us relax what does not matter and protect what does.

Verification

Checking that the cheap part is still the correct part

Low cost and low quality are not the same thing, but they travel together when nobody checks. Our inspection runs raw material verification, in-process monitoring, and final inspection, with 100% inspection before shipment. Reports go out on request. That is what separates a quote that is cheap from a quote that is cheap and wrong.

Ask for the first article on the first run. Compare it to the drawing yourself, not just to the report. Measure the critical bore and the bolt pattern. If the first article is right and the process is stable, the rest of the run follows; our qualification rate is 99.99%.

Certifications tell you which systems are already in place: ISO 9001:2015 for quality, IATF 16949:2016 for automotive, ISO 13485:2016 for medical hardware, and ISO 27001:2022 for data security. They do not replace a first article, but they mean the paperwork will exist when your auditor asks.

Keep drawings and models confidential. Uploads are secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request. If your part is under a customer NDA, send it before we quote, not after.

FAQs

Common questions

Is cheap China CNC machining lower quality?

Not automatically. The price gap usually comes from machine-hour rates, setup efficiency, and volume, not from skipping steps.

It becomes lower quality when inspection is removed or the alloy is substituted. Ask what is measured and which grade is quoted.

What tolerance can I expect on a low-cost job?

We hold ±0.005 mm (0.0002 in) on critical features across a production run.

Features that are not marked as critical typically run at ±0.05 mm, which is where most of the savings sit.

Do you have a minimum order quantity?

No. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs.

A single piece is quoted as a single piece, so the setup cost is not spread over other units.

How fast can parts ship?

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours after approval, and parts ship in 3–5 days.

Historical late-delivery probability is below 2 percent.

Which materials are available?

Aluminum 6061, 2024, 5052, 6063, 6082, 7075 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316L, 17-4PH and 440C; steel 1018, 1045, 4130, 4140 and 4340; plus brass, copper, titanium, Inconel, magnesium and engineering plastics.

Name the grade and temper in the PO so the quote and the part match.

How do you protect my design?

Uploads are secure and confidential. We sign an NDA on request, including before quoting.
