Sound familiar?

Most launch delays trace back to four places. Each one shows up late, and each one costs a retail window.

01

The enclosure looks printed on the shelf

Layer lines and visible parting lines read as cheap under retail lighting. A housing that ships as an SLA or FDM model often cannot be sold at the intended price point. Switching to machined or cast tooling late pushes the launch by weeks.

02

Wall thickness drifts on the second batch

Unit one fits. Unit two hundred does not, because the tool wore or the anodizing build-up was never accounted for. If your supplier quotes a tolerance band without a control plan, gaps and rattles appear after the first production run.

03

Cosmetic finishes fail handling and drop tests

Clear anodize shows fingerprints. Soft-touch coatings chip at the seam. Wearables and portable audio take daily impact, and a finish that passes incoming inspection can still fail a 1 m drop. The fix is usually in the substrate and edge radius, not the coating itself.

04

The prototype shop cannot scale to 10,000

A 3D printing bureau is fast for five units and uneconomic past a few hundred. Moving to a second supplier means new DFM, new fixtures and a fresh first-article cycle. Every handoff adds a week and a chance to lose the design intent.

How we run it

One supplier from prototype to production

Machining, sheet metal, 3D printing and finishing under the same roof means no re-qualification between stages.

Prototype stage

Get a working unit in days, not weeks

Most consumer hardware needs three or four physical iterations before the industrial design locks. We run those iterations on the same machines that will make production parts, so what you approve on the bench is what you get on the line.

Upload a STEP file and we return a DFM report with the quote, usually within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of approval.

Scale to 10,000+ without changing suppliers

When volumes climb, the same part moves to mill-turn centers, die casting or sheet metal without a new DFM cycle. We hold the drawing, the fixtures and the finish specification, so the second batch matches the first.

No minimum order quantity applies. You can order one unit for a trade show and 10,000 for retail from the same process route.

Capabilities

Services used on consumer hardware

01

5 Axis CNC Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers cut complex housings, undercuts and sculpted surfaces in one setup. Useful when the industrial design has no flat reference face.

02

CNC Milling & Turning

27 three-axis machines, 12 four-axis mills and 16 mill-turn centers cover everything from flat panels to threaded shafts up to 4,000 mm.

03

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Bent chassis, brackets and perforated grilles with consistent bend radii. Good fit for products that need a metal frame behind a plastic shell.

04

Custom 3D Printing

Small batches and fast iterations. Layer orientation and material choice get specified up front so the printed part survives drop and heat testing.

05

Metal Die Casting

ADC12 aluminum and zinc castings for enclosures where wall thickness and unit cost drive the decision. Machined and finished after casting.

06

Part Surface Finishing

Clear, colour and hardcoat anodizing, plating, powder coating, bead blasting and laser marking with a 1.5 mm minimum character height.

Why GreatLight

What you get that a prototype shop cannot offer

15Y

15 years in metal and plastic

Founded in 2011. Three wholly-owned plants across 7,600 m², with 150 technicians on the floor. Long enough to have seen most enclosure failure modes twice.

±0.005

Tolerance held, not quoted

Impossible to hit a tolerance band by luck at volume. Fixtures, temperature and in-process monitoring are planned before the first cut, not after a rejection.

0 MOQ

One unit or ten thousand

No minimum order quantity. The same drawing runs as a single prototype or a 10,000+ part order without a re-quote or a new DFM pass.

ISO

Four certifications on file

ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. The last one matters when your CAD files are the product.

12 h

Quote and DFM in half a day

A quotation and a free DFM analysis land within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of approval when material is in stock.

<2%

Late delivery kept rare

Historical late-delivery probability sits below 2%. Parts normally ship in 3–5 days. We would rather flag a risk at quote stage than miss a launch.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask before sending files

Which files do you need for a quote?

A STEP or IGES file plus a 2D drawing if you have one. The drawing matters when a feature has a tolerance, a finish callout or a thread specification that the 3D model only implies.

If you only have a mesh file, send it anyway. We will tell you what is missing rather than guess at a fit-critical dimension.

How tight can you hold on a cosmetic surface?

Ra 0.2–0.8 μm is achievable on visible faces, and ±0.005 mm on critical features. The finish and the tolerance are separate decisions and should be called out separately on the drawing.

If a surface is both cosmetic and datum-critical, mention it at quote stage. It changes the fixture design and sometimes the process order.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is none. One unit is fine. The same drawing can run as a single prototype or a 10,000+ part order.

Unit price drops as volume rises, but we do not require a batch size before starting.

Will my design look different after anodizing?

Yes, and it needs to be planned for. Anodizing adds a thin oxide layer that changes the dimension slightly and shifts the colour depending on alloy and Bath chemistry.

Hardcoat builds more than clear anodize. If the part has a mating fit, give us the final dimension and we will compensate in the machining stage.

Can you keep the design confidential?

Yes. Uploads are secure and confidential. An NDA can be signed before any part is made.

The management system is certified to ISO 27001:2022, which covers how design data is stored and who can see it.

When should I use 3D printing instead of CNC?

Use 3D printing when the geometry is complex, the quantity is under about 50 units, or you are still checking ergonomics and feel. It is the cheaper way to learn that a button is in the wrong place.

Move to CNC once the design is stable and the part must hold tolerance, take a cosmetic finish, or survive a drop test. Printed parts rarely pass all three.

How do you handle color matching across batches?

We keep the alloy, the anodizing bath and the finish specification on record for the part. Colour drift between batches usually comes from switching alloy or from an uncontrolled anodize bath.

For critical colour, send a physical master sample and we will match against it rather than against a Pantone number.

What happens if a part fails inspection?

Every part is inspected before shipment, with raw material checks, in-process monitoring and a final inspection. Reports are available on request.

If a dimension is out of tolerance, we tell you before it ships. Rework or remanufacture is decided with you, not for you.
