Where it goes wrong

The four failures we see on N10675 jobs

This alloy is soft, gummy, and work-hardens fast. Most problems come from treating it like 316 stainless.

01

Does your tooling break down mid-run?

N10675 work-hardens the moment the edge rubs instead of cuts. A dull insert raises cutting force, chips the nose, and you lose the setup. We program constant feed per tooth, keep radial engagement controlled, and change edges on a counted schedule, not on sound.

02

Are you scrapping bores after heat or welding?

Residual stress in rolled bar moves the part once you remove 60% of the section. A bore that gauges true on the bench can close up overnight. Rough, stress-relieve, then finish. We leave stock for the second op and hold the critical diameter after the part has settled.

03

Is the surface tearing instead of cutting?

Too much speed and the material smears, leaving built-up edge and a torn finish. Too little and the tool rubs. We run coated carbide at moderate surface speed, flood coolant, and sharp positive geometry. Where the drawing calls for a seal face, we aim for Ra 0.8–1.6 μm.

04

Did the shop quote it like stainless steel?

Cycle time on this alloy runs two to three times a 316 part of the same shape. A quote built on stainless numbers comes back late or gets quietly re-priced. We quote the alloy, the stock form, and the inspection the drawing actually asks for.

How we run it

Machining N10675 without wrecking the part

Two things decide the outcome: how the tool enters the cut, and how you handle stress between operations.

Cutting strategy

Toolpath and tooling built for a gummy nickel alloy

This alloy sits at the soft end of the nickel family. It does not harden from heat, it hardens from deformation. Every pass that rubs instead of shearing leaves a harder skin for the next pass to deal with.

We keep the cutter engaged, run constant chip load, and avoid dwell. Roughing removes the bulk with high-feed paths, then a semi-finish pass clears the work-hardened layer before the finish pass touches the tolerance band.

  • 1
Coated carbide, positive rakeSharp geometry keeps the material shearing rather than smearing on the flank.
  • 2
Flood coolant throughoutHeat stays in the chip. No thermal cracking on interrupted cuts.
  • 3
Counted edge changesInserts come out on a schedule, so the last part cuts like the first.

Stress relief and inspection between operations

Thin-wall valve bodies, reactor internals, and pipe spools move when you take a heavy section down to a thin one. If you chase the dimension in one setup, the part relaxes after it leaves the machine and the measurement is worthless.

We plan the sequence around that. Rough, relieve, semi-finish, then finish the mating features last. Critical diameters and seal faces get checked on the machine and again at final inspection. Reports come with the shipment on request.

Capabilities

What we machine from N10675 stock

One shop for the full part, from bar to finished surface.

01

5-axis machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers handle valve bodies, impellers, and manifolds with compound angles in fewer setups. Less refixturing means less chance of a scrapped face.

02

CNC turning and mill-turn

16 mill-turn centers cut shafts, flanges, and nozzles complete in one cycle. Turning and milling in the same setup keeps concentricity where the drawing needs it.

03

3- and 4-axis milling

27 three-axis and 12 four-axis machines for plates, housings, and brackets. Good fit for moderate complexity at a lower hourly rate than 5-axis.

04

Prototyping

No minimum order quantity. One part or 10,000. First articles let you pressure-test the design before you commit to a run.

05

Surface finishing

Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing, polishing, and laser marking. Seal faces and gasket grooves get the finish the drawing specifies.

06

Inspection and reporting

CMM and hand gauges, in-process checks, and dimensional reports on request. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 systems behind the paperwork.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask before releasing the drawing

What is the difference between Hastelloy B, B-2, B-3, and N10675?

They are the same nickel-molybdenum family at different stages of the specification. B-2 lowered the iron and carbon limits to stop weld-zone corrosion. B-3 added tungsten and cut the iron and chromium further, which improved thermal stability and forming. N10675 is the current UNS designation covering the modern B-3 type chemistry.

For a new drawing, buy to N10675 or B-3. If the drawing still says B-2, the material is harder to source and the weldability is worse. Tell us which revision you are bound to and we will work to it.

Can you machine N10675 to ±0.005 mm on a bore?

Yes, with the right sequence. The tolerance itself is not the hard part. Holding it after the part relaxes is. We rough, stress-relieve, then finish, and the critical bore is cut near the end of the process.

Very deep bores in a gummy alloy are a different problem. Beyond roughly 4:1 depth to diameter, tool deflection and chip evacuation start to drive the result, and we will say so in the DFM review rather than promise a number we cannot check.

When should I not use N10675?

Anywhere the media is oxidizing. Ferric and cupric salts, dissolved oxygen, chlorine, and nitrate-bearing streams will attack this alloy quickly. It is also a poor choice for high-temperature service above roughly 600 °C, and it is not the answer for chloride stress-corrosion cracking in aerated seawater.

If the line sees both oxidizing and reducing conditions, C-276 is usually the safer pick even at higher material cost.

How much does N10675 machine work cost compared with stainless?

Cycle time runs two to three times a comparable 316 stainless part, and the bar stock costs several times more per kilogram. Tool wear is the other driver, because edges come out on a counted schedule rather than when they fail.

Send the drawing and we return a firm quotation with the DFM notes in 12 hours. You will see the operation breakdown, not a single blended number.

Do you supply the material or do I ship it?

Either works. We can source N10675 bar, plate, forging, and tube with mill certificates, or machine customer-supplied stock. If you supply it, we will confirm the heat number and dimensions on receipt and flag any condition that will affect the cut.

For customer-supplied material we still apply the same in-process monitoring. The origin of the metal does not change how the tolerance is held.

What surface finish can you achieve on a sealing face?

Ra 0.8–1.6 μm is our standard high finish and covers most gasket and O-ring seats. Where the drawing asks for finer, we can reach Ra 0.2–0.8 μm on accessible faces with a dedicated finishing pass.

Blind grooves and deep bores limit what any tool can reach. We will tell you which features can hit the number and which need a different sealing method.

How do you handle confidentiality on proprietary designs?

Uploads are secure and confidential. We sign an NDA on request before drawings are shared. Several of our customers work under standing agreements, and the parts are scheduled without the shop floor seeing the customer name.

What does a typical order timeline look like?

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of a released order. Standard parts ship in 3–5 days.

Nickel alloy stock is not always on the shelf in every thickness. If the material has to be mill-ordered, that lead time sits in front of the machining time, and we will state it up front in the quote.
