Hastelloy N10276 CNC Machining

Nickel-molybdenum-chromium parts for chloride, hypochlorite and mixed-acid service. We machine valve bodies, flanges, impellers and pump housings to ±0.005 mm, then polish the wetted surfaces.

Where the alloy fights back

Four failures that show up after the first shutdown

Most problems with this alloy start at the drawing or the setup, not at the machine.

01

Cutting data copied from 316L

N10276 work-hardens fast. Run stainless speeds and the insert edges rub instead of cut, so the surface tears and the tool wears out in minutes. We start from the alloy's own parameters: lower surface speed, heavier feed per tooth, no dwelling in the cut.

02

Heat sitting in the part

The alloy conducts heat poorly, so the cutting zone keeps it. Without high-pressure coolant aimed at the insert, the workpiece grows, the finish smears, and a thin-wall flange moves after the vise opens. We rough, cool, then take the finish pass on a settled part.

03

Wetted faces left as-machined

A Ra 3.2 μm surface holds chlorides and starts pitting earlier than a polished one. If the drawing calls for a polished wetted face and the shop ships turned marks, the part passes dimensional inspection and still fails in service.

04

No material traceability

In pressure and chemical service, the mill certificate matters as much as the dimensions. Without heat numbers tied to the finished lot, a failed batch is impossible to isolate and the whole order becomes suspect.

How we machine it

Setup, tooling and finishing built around one alloy

Two capabilities carry most N10276 jobs: rigid 5-axis setups and controlled wetted-surface finishing.

CNC Lathe Technical Specifications Terminology
Machining strategy

Rigid setups, positive cuts, no rubbing

N10276 sits between commercially pure nickel and a superalloy in how it cuts. It galls against the tool, work-hardens at the surface, and holds heat in the chip and the part. The fix is mechanical: short tool overhangs, carbide grades made for nickel, and a feed high enough to stay under the hardened layer.

We rough with the part well supported on 5-axis centers, then let it cool before the finishing pass. Deep pockets on valve bodies and impeller shrouds get trochoidal paths so the radial engagement stays constant. When the geometry allows it, we mill the seal face and the bore in one setup instead of two.

Surface and inspection

The wetted surface is a function, not a cosmetic

In chloride and hypochlorite service, pits start at machining marks. We hold Ra 0.8–1.6 μm as the working finish for sealing and wetted faces, and reach Ra 0.2–0.8 μm where the drawing asks for it. Polishing follows the direction of flow, not the direction that is easiest on the lathe.

Every lot gets a material check, in-process monitoring on critical features, and a final inspection before shipment. Reports come on request. If a bore or a seal face has a tolerance tighter than the process can hold repeatedly, we say so at the DFM stage rather than after the first article.

Material selection

Is N10276 the right call, or is a cheaper alloy enough?

Pick the alloy by the chemistry in the line, not by habit.

What we run on this alloy

Six processes for N10276 parts

01

5-axis CNC machining

Compound-angle ports, impeller passages and contoured seal faces cut in a single setup on 16 simultaneous 5-axis centers.

02

CNC milling and turning

Flanges, housings and shafts turned and milled with mill-turn centers so concentric features stay concentric.

03

4-axis and 3-axis machining

Flat plates, cover plates and drilled manifolds where the geometry does not need full simultaneous motion.

04

Surface finishing

Polishing, bead blasting and brushing on wetted faces, with Ra measured on the finished part.

05

Rapid prototyping

One-off valve internals and test coupons before the production run locks in the process.

06

Inspection and reporting

Dimensional reports, material traceability and finish measurements issued with the lot on request.

Why GreatLight

Six reasons engineers keep sending nickel-alloy work here

15Y

Nickel alloys are routine here

Founded in 2011. Fifteen years of work in Inconel, Hastelloy and titanium, not a sideline to aluminum parts.

±0.005 mm

Tolerances that survive repeat runs

Held on critical features across the lot, not just on the first article.

127

Machine capacity to absorb the work

127 high-precision CNC machines across three wholly-owned plants, so a rush job does not wait behind a long queue.

16

Simultaneous 5-axis centers

Complex ports and contoured faces machined without stacking setups and adding error.

FAQs

Questions we get before the first cut

Can you machine N10276 from customer-supplied bar or plate?

Yes. Send the material with its mill certificate and heat number, and we will machine to your drawing and keep the traceability with the finished lot.

If you would rather we source it, tell us the specification and form. We will confirm availability before quoting a ship date.

What surface finish should I specify for a wetted face?

Ra 0.8–1.6 μm is the working standard for sealing and wetted faces. It removes most turning marks that would start pitting.

For critical seal faces, specify Ra 0.2–0.8 μm. Below that, cost climbs quickly and the gain in corrosion resistance is small.

Is N10276 always the right alloy for chloride service?

No. It earns its cost in wet chloride, hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide and mixed acid plus chloride service.

In dry gas, low-chloride seawater or strong nitric acid, 316L, 904L or another grade often works and costs far less. Say what is in the line and we will tell you if the alloy is over-specified.

How do you stop thin-wall parts from moving during machining?

Rough with the part fully supported, let it cool, then take the finish pass. We keep radial engagement constant and avoid dwelling in the cut, which is what builds local heat.

On thin flanges we check the critical faces after the vise is released, not while the part is still clamped.

What is the smallest and largest quantity you will run?

There is no minimum order quantity. We machine from one prototype to runs of 10,000 pieces or more.

Prototypes and test coupons are a normal starting point for a new N10276 part.

How fast can I get a quote and the parts?

Quotation and free DFM analysis within 12 hours of receiving drawings. Production can start within 24 hours after approval.

Parts ship in 3–5 days. That depends on drawing review and material availability, which we confirm before committing.

Do you sign an NDA before I send drawings?

Yes. An NDA is available on request, and uploads are handled as confidential.

If your drawings carry export-control markings, tell us at the start so we can confirm the job fits before you send files.

Which features are worth redesigning to cut cost?

Deep narrow slots, sharp internal corners and tolerances tighter than the function needs are the usual cost drivers in this alloy.

A slightly larger corner radius or a looser tolerance on a non-sealing face often removes a second setup. Send the drawing and we will mark those spots in the DFM review.
