What tolerance and machine travel mean for your part
A shop that advertises metal CNC machining services near me is really advertising a process window. Tolerance is the first number to pin down. We hold ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) on critical features, which covers most mating bores, bearing seats and locating pins. If your drawing calls for ±0.05 mm, almost any 3-axis machine will do the job, and you should not pay for a tighter process than you need.
Geometry decides the machine more than size does. A part with pockets on two faces can run on a 3-axis mill with two setups. A part with angled ports, undercuts or five-sided access belongs on a simultaneous 5-axis center, where we run 16 of them. Forcing 5-axis geometry onto a 3-axis machine means extra fixtures, more setups and a real chance of stack-up error.
Size sets the floor on what is possible. Our largest travel is 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm, which suits long rails, frames and extrusion profiles. Medium plates run on 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm and 600 × 600 × 600 mm machines. Small, high-count parts run on 500 × 500 × 450 mm and 500 × 310 × 200 mm machines, where cycle time per part is lower.
Turning is a separate question. Parts that are mostly cylindrical, such as shafts, bushings and adapters, belong on a lathe or a mill-turn center. We run 16 mill-turn centers, which cut a turned part and mill its flats or cross-holes in one setup. That removes a second op and the concentricity error that comes with it.
- 1Send the 3D model and the 2D drawingThe model defines geometry; the drawing defines which features are critical.
- 2Mark datum featuresA clear datum scheme lets the shop plan setups and inspection the same way you do.
- 3Flag any feature under ±0.01 mmThose drive machine choice, fixture design and inspection time.
Material and surface finish choices that change the quote
Material availability drives lead time more than machining does. We machine aluminium 6061, 6061-T6, 2024, 5052, 5083, 6063, 6082, 7075 and ADC12; stainless 303, 304, 316, 316L, 420, 430, 431, 440C and 17-4PH; and steels such as 1018, 1045, 4130, 4140, 4340, A36 and tool steel. Copper, brass, titanium and magnesium are also in scope, including TA1, TA2, TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V) and Inconel.
Hardness changes the cutting strategy. 7075 aluminium and 17-4PH stainless cut cleanly but need slower feeds and sharper tooling than 6061. Inconel and titanium work-harden at the cut, so we adjust speeds, use more coolant and plan for shorter tool life. If your part is a bracket or a housing, 6061-T6 is usually the fastest and cheapest route that still holds tolerance.
Surface finish is specified as Ra, and the number you pick has a cost. As-machined surfaces sit around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. A high finish is Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, and a fine finish reaches Ra 0.2–0.8 μm. Tight finish usually means a finishing pass with a smaller stepover, so cycle time goes up. Ask for the loosest finish that satisfies the function.
Post-processing adds a second schedule. We offer anodizing in clear, colour, hardcoat and conductive types; electroless nickel, zinc, silver and gold plating; powder coating and black oxide; bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing; and laser marking with a minimum character height of 1.5 mm. If a logo or part number has to survive, tell us the marking depth you expect before the parts are finished.
- 1Name the temper, not just the alloy6061-T6 and 6061-O machine and behave differently.
- 2State the finish as RaA number removes argument at inspection.
- 3Group finishing stepsAnodize plus laser marking in one flow avoids a second shipping round.
Certifications, inspection and the paperwork you should ask for
Certifications are a filter, not a sales point. ISO 9001:2015 covers general quality management and fits most industrial work. IATF 16949:2016 applies to automotive and EV programs. ISO 13485:2016 applies to medical devices. ISO 27001:2022 covers information security, which matters when you send CAD files and process data to an outside shop. GreatLight holds all four.
Inspection is where a quote becomes defensible. We inspect raw material on arrival, monitor in-process dimensions, and inspect 100% of parts before shipment. Reports are available on request. Ask for the report format before you place the order, because a first-article report, a full dimensional report and a simple pass note are three different documents.
Process capability is the number behind the number. Our qualification rate is 99.99%. That is not a marketing line; it is the share of parts that pass final inspection without rework. If a shop cannot tell you its rework rate or its scrap rate, the tolerance claim on its website is unverified.
Confidentiality belongs in the same conversation. Uploads are handled as secure and confidential, and we sign an NDA on request. If your part is a pre-launch product, agree on the NDA before you release the model, not after the first chips are cut.
- 1Match cert to industryMedical work needs ISO 13485; auto work needs IATF 16949.
- 2Agree the report type up frontFirst-article, dimensional or pass note.
- 3Sign the NDA before file transferCheaper than a recall or a leak.
Lead time, MOQ and how to read a fast quote
Lead time has three parts: quoting, setup and machining. We return a quotation and a free DFM analysis within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours after you approve the quote, and parts ship in 3–5 days. Our historical late-delivery probability is below 2%. Treat any shop that quotes a single number without naming these stages as a risk.
MOQ is the silent cost driver. We have no minimum order quantity, so a single prototype and a 10,000+ part run both fit. That matters because a shop with a high MOQ will either refuse your prototype or run it on a different process, and the production parts then behave differently from the sample you approved.
Read the quote for what is missing. A low price that excludes material certification, finishing, inspection reports or packaging is not a low price. Ask whether the number covers the finish, the report and the shipping terms. Compare landed cost, not unit cost.
DFM feedback is the cheapest engineering you will get. When we return a quote in 12 hours, we also flag thin walls, deep pockets, tight inside corners and features that need a custom tool. Fixing those in CAD costs minutes. Fixing them after the first run costs a new setup.
- 1Split the lead timeQuote, setup and machining are three separate clocks.
- 2Confirm the process is the same for 1 and 10,000Otherwise your sample does not represent production.
- 3Compare landed costInclude finishing, inspection and freight.
Step by step: how to vet a shop and place a clean order
Follow this order and most surprises disappear before the first cut.
- 11. Write down the critical featuresList every dimension tighter than ±0.05 mm, plus any datum and any surface finish. This list becomes the inspection plan.
- 22. Send the model, drawing and quantityInclude STEP or native CAD, the 2D drawing, the alloy and temper, the finish, and both the prototype and production quantities.
- 33. Ask for DFM feedback with the quoteExpect it within 12 hours. Read the flagged features and decide whether to change the design or accept the cost.
- 44. Confirm the process for both quantitiesAsk which machine will run the prototype and which will run the production batch. If the answer differs, ask about the tolerance difference.
- 55. Agree on the inspection reportChoose first-article, full dimensional or pass note. Ask for the sample format before you approve the quote.
- 66. Sign the NDA and confirm file handlingDo this before releasing the model if the product is not public yet.
- 77. Approve the first article before the full runCheck the critical features against your list. A 3–5 day first-article cycle protects the whole order.
- 88. Keep the process sheet for the next orderSame machine, same fixture, same inspection plan. That is how the second order matches the first.
Frequently asked questions
What tolerance can you hold on a typical metal part?
We hold ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) on critical features. That covers most bearing bores, mating faces and locating pins.
Tighter work is possible on specific features after a DFM review. Looser work is cheaper, so tell us which dimensions actually need the tight band.
Do you have a minimum order quantity?
No. We run from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs.
Keeping both on the same process sheet is the point. Your approved sample then represents what production will deliver.
How fast can I get a quote and parts?
Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of approval, and parts ship in 3–5 days.
Our historical late-delivery probability is below 2%.
Which certifications do you hold?
ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022.
IATF 16949 covers automotive and EV programs, ISO 13485 covers medical devices, and ISO 27001 covers information security for the files you send.
What is the largest part you can machine?
Our maximum processing size is 4,000 mm, with travel of 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm on the largest machine.
Medium plates run on 750 × 1,150 × 550 mm and 600 × 600 × 600 mm machines. A Ø400 mm rotary table handles round work that needs indexing.
Can you help before I finalize the design?
Yes. The free DFM analysis that ships with the quote flags thin walls, deep pockets, tight inside corners and features that need custom tooling.
Changing those in CAD takes minutes. Changing them after a run costs a new fixture and a new setup.
