Trusted ODM 3 Axis CNC Machining Factory China: How to Vet One

This guide is for engineers and sourcing leads who need a 3 axis CNC machining factory China partners can keep for years, not for one purchase order. It lists the checks that separate a real ODM from a shop that only runs the file you send.

Key takeaways

3 axis covers more than you thinkMost prismatic parts, brackets and housings never need a fourth or fifth axis. On the right part, 3 axis holds tolerance and costs less.
Ask for the machine list, not a brochureCount the 3 axis spindles and their travels. GreatLight runs 27 three-axis machines plus 12 four-axis mills and 16 five-axis centers.
Certificates must match your industryISO 9001:2015 for general work, IATF 16949:2016 for automotive, ISO 13485:2016 for medical, ISO 27001:2022 for data.
Quote speed reveals the processA DFM analysis inside 12 hours means an engineer read your model. A bare price means nobody did.
One process, one supplier, one audit trailMachining, finishing and metrology under one roof removes the re-qualification step at each hand-off.

What 3 Axis Machining Can and Cannot Do

A 3 axis machine moves the spindle in X, Y and Z while the part stays clamped. That is the whole geometry. If every feature on your part can be reached from one direction, or from a handful of setups, 3 axis will cut it at the lowest hourly rate on the floor.

Prismatic parts are the natural fit: brackets, plates, manifolds, heat sinks, control housings, fixture blocks, pump bodies. A 3 axis mill with a Ø400 mm rotary table still counts as 3 axis work, because the table indexes between setups rather than cutting continuously in five axes.

The limit shows up when you need a feature on a face you cannot reach without re-clamping. Undercuts, deep side pockets on four faces, and blended compound angles all push the part toward 4 or 5 axis. Re-clamping is not free: every new setup adds a datum error and a fixture cost.

A useful test before you send an RFQ. Count how many distinct tool approach directions the part needs. One or two means 3 axis. Four or more, or any feature that follows a curved surface, means you should ask for a 4 or 5 axis quote as well and compare total cost, not hourly rate.

Judging the factory

Reading a 3 Axis CNC Machining Factory China Quote

A quote is a technical document, not a price tag. Ask what tolerance the shop is quoting to, which machine the job is planned on, and how many setups they counted. If the answer is vague, the price is a guess and will move once production starts.

Compare the machine list against the part size. GreatLight runs 127 high-precision CNC machines, of which 27 are three-axis. Travels range from 500 × 310 × 200 mm on the compact frames up to 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm on the large ones. A part that fits a compact frame should not be quoted on a large machine.

Materials matter as much as geometry. Aluminum 6061-T6 and 7075 cut fast and hold ±0.005 mm without drama. Stainless 316L and 17-4PH move more under heat, so the shop needs a roughing and finishing pass with a stress-relief pause on thin walls. Titanium TC4 and Inconel raise tool wear and cycle time, and the quote should reflect that.

Ask about the finishing chain too. Anodizing, electroless nickel, black oxide, bead blasting and laser marking all change lead time and can change the critical dimensions. A factory that does finishing in-house controls both. GreatLight keeps those steps under one roof, so your part is not shipped out and re-qualified at a second vendor.

Finally, read the inspection clause. "100% inspection before shipment" means every part, not a sample. Raw material check, in-process monitoring and a final inspection report on request give you something to file when a customer audits you.

ODM depth

Why ODM Depth Changes the Program, Not Just the Part

The ODM part of the relationship starts before toolpaths. A trusted partner reads your model, flags a wall that is too thin for the material, or a hole that will chatter at the depth you drew, and sends a DFM note back with the quote. That note is where most of the money is saved.

Engineering co-development means the supplier holds context across revisions. When rev C changes a boss height, the shop already knows which fixture and which datum carried rev B. A transactional shop re-quotes from zero and re-learns the part every time.

Confidentiality belongs in this section. If your drawings carry unreleased geometry, ask for an NDA and check how files are stored. GreatLight works to ISO 27001:2022 practice for information security, and uploads are treated as confidential by default.

Industry certificates should match your end market, not just look good on a page. Automotive and EV programs usually want IATF 16949:2016. Medical device work looks for ISO 13485:2016. General industrial and robotics work is normally satisfied with ISO 9001:2015. Ask which certificate covers the plant that will actually run your job.

Scale is the last piece. A partner that can take one prototype and then a 10,000-part run without a new supplier audit saves you a full qualification cycle. GreatLight quotes from one part upward with no minimum order quantity.

Risk list

Common Traps When Buying 3 Axis Parts From China

The first trap is comparing hourly rates instead of landed part cost. A shop with a low rate that needs three extra setups, or ships the part out for anodizing, will land higher than a factory that runs the whole chain in-house. Compare the delivered part, in spec, at your dock.

The second trap is an unclear datum. If your drawing does not name datum A, B and C, every shop will pick its own, and the parts will not assemble with the ones you already have. Put the datum scheme on the drawing before you send it.

The third trap is treating a certificate as a substitute for a process. A certificate says the system is audited. It does not say the operator on your job checked the bore before the part came off the machine. Ask what is measured, how often, and what happens when a dimension drifts.

The fourth trap is silence on lead time risk. Ask for the historical on-time figure in writing. GreatLight reports a late-delivery probability below 2%, with parts shipping in 3–5 days on released orders. If a supplier will not put a number on it, treat the schedule as open.

The fifth trap is a single-source finishing vendor. If the anodizer is a third party, your part leaves the controlled process and any scratch or dimension shift becomes a dispute. Keep as many steps as possible inside one plant.

How to run the check

7 Steps to Vet a 3 Axis Supplier Before You Order

Work through these in order. Each step produces a document or a number you can compare between suppliers.

  • 1
    1. Sort your part by approach directionList every machined face and the tool direction needed. One or two directions means a 3 axis quote is valid. Four or more, or any continuously blended surface, means you should also price 4 or 5 axis.
  • 2
    2. Ask for the machine list with travelsRequest spindle count, axis count and table travels. Check that your largest part fits with room for the fixture. A 4,000 × 400 × 150 mm envelope is the top of the range at GreatLight.
  • 3
    3. Send the 3D model, not a PDFA STEP file lets the shop check wall thickness, tool reach and minimum internal radius. A 2D PDF hides the geometry that drives cost. Expect DFM comments back within 12 hours.
  • 4
    4. Fix the tolerance and finish on paperState the critical dimensions and the finish you need. As-machined is Ra 1.6–3.2 μm, a high cosmetic finish is Ra 0.8–1.6 μm, and fine work goes to Ra 0.2–0.8 μm. Do not leave this to the shop's default.
  • 5
    5. Confirm the certification that covers your plantMatch the certificate to your industry: ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 or ISO 27001:2022. Ask for the scope and the site name, not just the logo.
  • 6
    6. Agree the inspection packageDecide before the order whether you want a first article report, a material certificate, or full dimensional reports. Reports are available on request; asking later adds a shipment cycle.
  • 7
    7. Run a small pilot before the full releaseOrder one or two pieces, measure them yourself, then release the balance. Production can start within 24 hours of a released order, so the pilot costs little and removes the guesswork.
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my part should be 3 axis or 5 axis?

Count the tool approach directions the part needs. One or two directions, with flat or stepped features, is 3 axis work. If the part has curved surfaces, deep undercuts, or features on four or more faces, price 4 or 5 axis as well.

Compare total cost, not hourly rate. A 5 axis machine can finish a complex part in one setup, which sometimes beats three 3 axis setups once you add fixture cost and datum error.

What tolerance can a 3 axis CNC machining factory in China hold?

On well-fixtured aluminum parts, ±0.005 mm (±0.0002 in) is achievable and is the documented capability at GreatLight. Thin walls, long tool reach and hard materials such as Inconel widen that band.

Tell the shop which dimensions are critical. If every dimension carries the same tight tolerance, the quote rises for no reason.

Is there a minimum order quantity for 3 axis machining?

Not at GreatLight. Orders run from one prototype to 10,000+ parts with no minimum order quantity.

For a first order, one or two pilot pieces measured against the drawing is the cheapest way to confirm the process before you release the full quantity.

Which certifications should I ask for?

Match the certificate to your end market. ISO 9001:2015 covers general industrial work, IATF 16949:2016 covers automotive and EV, ISO 13485:2016 covers medical devices, and ISO 27001:2022 covers information security.

Ask for the certificate scope and the plant name. A certificate held by a parent company does not always cover the site running your job.

How fast can a quote and a first shipment come back?

Quotation and a free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours of a complete upload. Production can start within 24 hours of a released order, and parts typically ship in 3–5 days.

These times assume the drawing is complete and the material is in stock. Any change to tolerance, finish or material resets the clock.

How is my design kept confidential?

Uploads are treated as confidential, and a non-disclosure agreement is available on request before you send any file.

If your program needs documented controls, ask for the information security practices the plant follows. GreatLight works to ISO 27001:2022 practice.
