China–Europe supply chain shift

How China Is Disrupting Supply Chains in Europe

Rail freight, CEE assembly and Asian sourcing are rewriting European procurement. For engineers, the practical question is which parts still belong in a Dongguan CNC shop. We machine them to ±0.005 mm and ship in 3–5 days.

Where it hurts

Four ways the shift shows up on your desk

None of these are strategy problems. They are tolerance, lead time and paperwork problems.

01

Your European tier-1 lead time doubled

A casting or forging that used to arrive in three weeks now quotes eight. You built the assembly schedule around the old number, and the line sits waiting on a bracket that costs less than the overtime it causes.

02

A new supplier quoted cheap, then failed first article

The price looked right. The first article came back with hole positions outside ±0.05 mm and a surface finish nobody could anodize cleanly. You now own the rework and the second sourcing cycle.

03

You cannot name the shop that makes your part

Three tiers down, the origin is unclear. When a customer audit asks who machined the housing and under which quality system, the honest answer is that nobody in your building knows.

04

Tooling and fixtures are stuck in one region

You want a second qualified source, but the fixture, the CAM setup and the inspection report live with one vendor. Re-qualifying elsewhere means paying for all of it twice.

The working answer

Keep the parts that reward Asian machining, move the rest

Not every component belongs on a 12,000 km route. We help you sort which ones do.

Which parts still make sense to machine in China

The disruption is real, but it is not uniform. Parts that carry a lot of machining hours and little freight volume are the ones that still win when they cross a border. A 6061-T6 manifold block with 40 tapped holes, a 17-4PH valve body with a sealing face at Ra 0.2–0.8 μm, a thin-wall aluminum housing that only a 5-axis setup can hold without distortion. These are labor and machine-time heavy, and light on the pallet.

The parts that stopped making sense are the opposite shape. Low-value brackets, large welded frames, anything where freight is a bigger line item than the cut. For those, a regional shop usually beats us. We will say so in the DFM review rather than quote a part that will lose money for both sides.

What has to be true before the part leaves Dongguan

On a cross-border route, the cheap failure is the one you find at your dock. We run raw material certification on arrival, monitor in-process dimensions on the machine, and inspect 100% of parts before shipment. Reports go out with the parts when your drawing or your customer requires them. That is the part of the chain you can actually control.

Tooling is where the second-source problem usually dies. Fixtures, soft jaws and CAM files stay with the job, so a repeat order three months later comes off the same setup. When you want a European shop as a parallel source, the inspection report and the setup sheet give them something to match instead of a guess.

What we run

Six services that cover the machined portion of your BOM

One shop, one quality system, from prototype to 10,000+ part runs.

01

5 Axis CNC Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers for multi-face parts in one setup. Fewer fixtures, tighter true position, less handling damage on thin walls.

02

4 Axis and 3 Axis CNC Machining

12 four-axis mills and 27 three-axis machines for prismatic parts, plates and housings where the extra axis buys nothing.

03

CNC Milling & Turning

Mill-turn centers with a Ø400 mm rotary table. Shafts, bushings, fittings and turned housings held to ±0.005 mm.

04

Rapid Prototyping

Machined prototypes from one piece, plus 3D printing and vacuum casting when you need a form check before committing to metal.

05

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Enclosures, brackets and chassis that pair with your machined parts, so the assembly arrives from one supplier with one inspection standard.

06

Part Surface Finishing

Anodizing, plating, powder coating, bead blasting and laser marking. Marking down to 1.5 mm character height for traceability.

FAQs

Questions European buyers ask before the first order

Is China still the right source for machined parts, given the supply chain disruption?

For parts where machine time is the main cost and freight is minor, yes. Complex housings, valve bodies and thin-wall aluminium parts still come out cheaper here even after a long route.

For large welded frames and low-value catalogue parts, a regional shop usually wins. We tell you which side your part falls on during the DFM review, before you commit to an order.

How do you protect our drawing and our customer's design?

Uploads go through a secure channel and are treated as confidential. A non-disclosure agreement is available on request, and we can sign yours before a drawing is sent.

Production files stay with the job. We do not use customer parts or drawings in marketing material.

Can you match a tolerance and finish we already have on a European drawing?

Send the print as it is. We machine to ±0.005 mm on qualified features and can hold Ra 0.2–0.8 μm on sealing and bearing surfaces.

If a callout is tighter than the process can hold repeatably, the DFM reply says so and proposes a change. We would rather renegotiate a tolerance than ship parts that fail your incoming inspection.

What happens if the first article is out of specification?

In-process monitoring catches most drift before the run finishes, and 100% inspection happens before packing. If a dimension is out, the part does not ship.

We correct the setup, re-machine and re-inspect. The inspection record travels with the replacement lot so your incoming check has something to compare against.

Is there a minimum order quantity for a new part number?

No minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000+ part run go through the same shop and the same quality system.

That matters when a program is still in development. You can qualify the part at low volume and scale without a second supplier qualification.

How fast can you ship after the order is placed?

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of the order and the released drawing.

Standard parts ship in 3–5 days. Longer timelines usually come from material lead time or a finishing step, and we flag that in the quote rather than after the fact.

Which certifications cover your work?

ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. Which one applies depends on your industry.

Automotive and EV programs run under IATF 16949 process control. Medical device work follows ISO 13485. Information handling follows ISO 27001.

Can you act as a second source alongside our current shop?

Yes, and that is often the point. We quote to your existing drawing and inspection standard, so both sources produce comparable parts.

Send the drawing, the material callout and the critical dimensions. The DFM reply will list anything ambiguous before either side spends money on tooling.
