POM CNC Machining Service: 7 Checks Before You Order

This guide is for engineers and buyers sourcing machined acetal parts. It covers how to judge a POM CNC machining service on grade selection, achievable tolerance, wall sections, inspection and lead time, so you can compare quotes on the same basis instead of on unit price alone.

What a POM CNC machining service should tell you about grade

Acetal is not one material. Homopolymer, often sold as Delrin, is stiffer and more crystalline. Copolymer is more resistant to chemicals and holds long-term dimensions better. The two machine with different feeds and leave different surface finishes. If a supplier quotes generically for POM, ask which grade they priced.

The difference shows up in service, not on the drawing. A gear cut from homopolymer holds tooth form under load. The same gear in copolymer may run quieter but wear faster in a dry cycle. Neither is wrong. The question is what the part does.

Thick sections matter too. Homopolymer is more prone to center-line porosity above roughly 50 mm wall. If your part is a solid block, copolymer or a different geometry may be the better call. A supplier who flags this before quoting is reading your model, not just your file name.

  • 1
Ask for the grade on the quoteA generic POM line item is not enough to compare two suppliers.
  • 2
Match grade to functionWear parts, chemical exposure and ESD needs point to different grades.
  • 3
Flag thick sections earlyPorosity risk changes the grade choice, not just the cutting strategy.
Check 2

Tolerance and surface finish you can actually hold

POM moves with temperature and moisture, though far less than nylon. A shop that quotes ±0.005 mm on a 200 mm part without saying where is quoting a number, not a capability. Tight tolerance belongs on the features that control fit: bearing bores, gear pitch diameters, seal grooves.

General dimensions on the same part can sit at ±0.05 mm or looser and still work. Splitting the drawing this way often removes a finishing pass and shortens the cycle. Bring the critical features forward and let the rest breathe.

Surface finish follows tooling and coolant. As-machined acetal lands around Ra 1.6–3.2 μm. Fine finishes down to Ra 0.2–0.8 μm are possible on sealing faces and sliding surfaces with sharp tooling and controlled feed. Ask which faces need it. Polishing every surface is wasted money.

  • 1
Split critical from generalTight tolerance on functional features only.
  • 2
State the measurement methodCMM, micrometer or gauge pins give different confidence levels.
  • 3
Finish only where it mattersSealing and sliding faces justify fine finish. Cosmetic faces rarely do.
Check 3

Wall thickness, clamping and the mistakes that scrap parts

Acetal is soft enough to deflect under clamping pressure and springy enough to move after the vise opens. Thin walls under 1 mm are the usual failure point. A good shop adjusts fixture design, uses soft jaws, and takes light finishing cuts rather than pushing a heavy roughing pass.

Heat is the other risk. POM has a low melting point compared with metals. Dull tools or aggressive feed smear the surface instead of cutting it. You get a rough finish and a dimension that drifts as the part cools. Sharp carbide, high spindle speed and moderate feed keep the cut clean.

Coolant choice matters less than coolant presence. Air blast or a light mist controls chips and heat without swelling the material. Flood coolant works but needs to be clean and compatible with the grade, especially for food-grade or medical parts.

  • 1
Keep walls above 1 mm where possibleBelow that, expect fixture cost and higher scrap risk.
  • 2
Ask how the part is heldFixture design is where thin-wall POM jobs succeed or fail.
  • 3
Confirm coolant compatibilityFood-grade and medical grades have handling rules.
Check 4

Inspection, documentation and what travels with the parts

A POM CNC machining service should tell you what gets measured and when. For most parts that means material verification on arrival, in-process checks on critical features, and a final inspection before shipment. Ask for the sample size and the instruments used.

Inspection reports are available on request. If your assembly is regulated, the paperwork matters as much as the part. Certifications on file include ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. Match the certificate to your industry before you award the job.

Confidentiality is part of the same conversation. Uploads stay secure and confidential, and an NDA is available on request. If your drawings carry proprietary geometry, settle this before sending files.

  • 1
Ask what is measuredCritical features, sample size, instrument type.
  • 2
Match certificates to industryMedical, automotive and general industrial need different scopes.
  • 3
Settle NDA before files moveNDA available on request.
Check 5

Lead time, order size and quoting on the same basis

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours, and parts ship in 3–5 days. Historical late-delivery probability is below 2%. Those numbers assume the grade and stock size are available when the order lands.

There is no minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000-part run go through the same quoting path. That matters when you are validating a design and do not want to commit to a batch size yet.

When you compare two suppliers, put the same information on both quotes: grade, tolerance by feature, finish by face, inspection level and ship window. A lower unit price with a looser tolerance is not a lower price. It is a different part.

Workflow

How to vet a POM CNC machining service in 7 steps

Run these in order. Each one removes a supplier or sharpens the quote.

  • 1
Send the model and the gradeState homopolymer, copolymer or a filled grade. If you are unsure, say what the part does and let the shop recommend.
  • 2
Mark critical featuresIdentify bores, pitch diameters and seal grooves that need ±0.005 mm. Leave general dimensions at ±0.05 mm or looser.
  • 3
Flag thin walls and thick sectionsAnything under 1 mm or over 50 mm changes fixture design and grade choice. Raise it before the quote, not after.
  • 4
Specify finish by faceRa 0.2–0.8 μm for sealing and sliding surfaces. Ra 1.6–3.2 μm as-machined elsewhere.
  • 5
Ask for the inspection planWhat is measured, with which instrument, at what sample size, and whether a report ships with the parts.
  • 6
Confirm certificates and NDAMatch ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 13485 or ISO 27001 to your industry. Sign the NDA before file transfer if needed.
  • 7
Compare normalized quotesSame grade, tolerance, finish and inspection level. Then compare price and the 3–5 day ship window.
FAQs

POM CNC machining service questions

Is machined POM as strong as molded POM?

Machined POM keeps the same base polymer properties, but the surface and internal stress state differ from molding. For prototypes and low-to-medium volumes, machining avoids tooling cost and lets you change geometry between runs.

For very high volumes of a simple part, molding usually wins on unit cost. The crossover point depends on part complexity, not on a fixed number.

Can you hold ±0.005 mm on every dimension?

No, and a supplier who says yes without qualification is not reading the drawing. ±0.005 mm is realistic on critical features in a stable setup with the right fixture.

General dimensions on the same part are usually held at ±0.05 mm or looser. Splitting the tolerance this way lowers cost and cycle time.

What is the smallest wall you can machine in POM?

Under 1 mm, deflection during clamping and cutting becomes the main risk. It is doable with soft jaws, light finishing passes and a fixture built for the part.

Expect higher setup cost and a first-article check before the full run. If the design allows 1.5 mm or more, the part gets cheaper and more repeatable.

Does POM need a specific coolant?

POM cuts cleanly with air blast or a light mist. Flood coolant also works and helps with chip evacuation on deep pockets.

For food-grade and medical grades, confirm the coolant and handling match the grade requirements. Keep the machine clean between materials.

How do I compare two POM quotes fairly?

Put the same grade, tolerance by feature, finish by face, inspection level and ship window on both. A quote without those details is not comparable.

Unit price alone hides the differences that show up at assembly. Normalize first, then compare.

What documentation ships with the parts?

Inspection reports are available on request, covering material verification, in-process checks and final inspection. Ask which features are recorded.

Certifications on file are ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 27001:2022. Tell us your industry so the right scope is applied.
