10V 2Fe 3Al Titanium Alloy CNC Machining

This near-beta titanium forges and ages to high strength at lower weight than Ti-6Al-4V. We machine it on 5-axis centers, hold ±0.005 mm, and control heat and cutter wear from blank to final inspection.

Where near-beta titanium jobs go wrong

Most failures on these parts trace back to the blank, the cutter or the setup, not the drawing.

01

Burning the surface on a finishing pass

Beta titanium keeps its strength at cutting temperature better than Ti-6Al-4V, so a program that ran fine on 6Al-4V can smear or discolour the finish. You then spend a day re-polishing and re-inspecting a part that was already in tolerance.

02

Bowing after the last cut

Thin ribs and long pockets relieve residual stress as material comes off. A 0.3 mm bow across a 200 mm flange will not close on the mating face, and the whole batch has to be re-cut or straightened.

03

Cutter wear that creeps into the size

Titanium galls and welds to the edge. If the operator does not track flank wear, the last ten parts in a run drift 0.02–0.04 mm oversize and the thread or bore no longer gauges.

04

No traceable blank condition

The alloy is usually supplied forged and aged, then annealed or solution treated before machining. Without the mill certificate and the heat-treat state on file, your final mechanical properties are a guess, and an audit will find that gap.

How we run the part

Process control from blank to final inspection

Two things decide whether a 10V 2Fe 3Al part comes out right: the state of the blank and the heat going into the cut.

CNC Lathe Technical Specifications Terminology
Blank and setup

Start from a known condition

We ask for the mill certificate and the heat-treat state before programming. If the stock is forged and aged, we rough with 1.5–2 mm stock on the critical faces, then let the part rest before finishing so the stress can move.

For thin walls, we plan the sequence so the last operation removes the least material. Soft jaws or a fixture plate bored to the part profile hold the workpiece without pinching it, which keeps a 2 mm rib from springing.

Cutting strategy

Keep the heat in the chip, not the part

Titanium conducts heat poorly, so the edge takes the punishment. We run carbide with tight edge honing, high-pressure coolant aimed at the contact zone, and moderate surface speed. Pecking and dwell are kept out of the program.

The same behaviour that resists cracking also makes the material sticky. Deep pockets get trochoidal paths and a constant chip load, which keeps the cutter from rubbing and keeps the wall straight.

  • 1
High-pressure coolantDirected at the insert edge to break the chip and cool the zone.
  • 2
Trochoidal roughingConstant engagement for deep cavities and thin floors.
  • 3
Wear tracking per runEdge checked between parts so size does not drift late in the batch.

Services for near-beta titanium parts

01

5-Axis CNC Machining

Sixteen simultaneous 5-axis centers cut contoured forgings and angled bores in one setup, which matters when re-clamping a beta titanium part risks a shift.

02

3- and 4-Axis Milling

Twenty-seven 3-axis and twelve 4-axis machines cover plates, brackets and housings where the geometry does not need full contouring.

03

CNC Turning and Mill-Turn

Sixteen mill-turn centers handle shafts, bushings and fittings with cross-drilled holes, turning and milling on the same part number.

04

Rapid Prototyping

One-off titanium parts for fit checks and test rigs, with no minimum order, so you can validate a design before committing to a batch.

05

Surface Finishing

Bead blasting, tumbling, brushing and polishing, plus laser marking at a minimum character height of 1.5 mm for traceability.

06

Inspection and Reporting

Raw material check, in-process monitoring and final inspection on every order, with dimensional reports issued on request.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask about Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al

How does 10V 2Fe 3Al behave on the machine compared with Ti-6Al-4V?

In the annealed state it cuts more cleanly than Grade 5. The near-beta structure is less prone to the smearing and built-up edge that plague 6Al-4V, so you can often run a slightly higher surface speed with the same tool life.

That advantage disappears if the part arrives already aged to high strength. We ask for the heat-treat state first, because that single fact changes speeds, feeds and the risk of surface damage.

Can you machine it from bar stock, or does it have to be a forging?

Both are possible. Bar stock is fine for smaller parts and prototypes, though the alloy is far more common as a forging in aerospace work.

Bar availability is the usual constraint. If you need a specific diameter, expect a mill lead time that sits outside our own 3 to 5 day machining window.

What tolerance can you hold on a thin-wall titanium part?

We work to ±0.005 mm on critical features, but thin walls are limited by deflection more than by the machine. A 2 mm wall over 100 mm will move if the stock is removed in one pass.

We rough with 1.5 to 2 mm of stock, let the part rest, then finish. That sequence is the reason the dimension holds.

Do you need the mill certificate before you start?

Yes, and it saves time. The certificate and heat-treat state tell us what the material will do after the last cut, which is where most scrap on beta titanium comes from.

If the certificate is not available, we can still quote, but the process plan will be conservative and the first article carries more risk.

Which finishes suit this alloy?

Bead blasting and tumbling are common for removing tool marks without altering dimensions. Brushing and polishing give a controlled cosmetic finish on visible faces.

Anodizing and plating are possible, but the titanium oxide layer behaves differently from aluminium. Tell us the finish before we set the pre-finish dimensions.

How many parts do I have to order?

There is no minimum order quantity. One prototype and a 10,000-part run both go through the same planning step.

For a single part, the setup dominates the cost. For a large run, we look at fixture design and tool wear first, because those drive the per-part number.

How do you handle my drawings and the NDA?

Uploads are kept secure and confidential. A non-disclosure agreement is available on request before you send anything.

We hold ISO 27001:2022 for information security, which covers how drawings and process data are stored on our side.

How fast can I get a quote and parts?

Quotation and a free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of agreement.

Parts ship in 3 to 5 days for most titanium work. If the blank has to be ordered, that lead time is separate and we will say so up front.
