Titanium Auto Parts

Titanium Auto Parts

We turn and mill titanium auto parts for engine, suspension and drivetrain use. Ti-6Al-4V and CP grades, held to ±0.005 mm, finished with anodizing or bead blasting. One prototype or a 10,000-part run.

Where titanium jobs go wrong

Titanium punishes a shop that treats it like aluminum

These are the four failures we hear about most often from automotive teams moving a part from aluminum to titanium.

01

Heat sits in the cut, not in the chip

Titanium conducts heat poorly. Run aluminum feeds and speeds and the cutting edge reaches 1,000 °C while the chip stays cool. Tools fail mid-run, and you lose the finishing passes on a batch that was already 80 percent complete.

02

Thin walls spring back after clamping

Suspension arms, brackets and turbo flanges are often 1.5–2 mm thick. Heavy vise pressure distorts the part, the cut measures on size in the machine, and the part relaxes oval once the jaws open. Scrap rate climbs and nobody sees it until final inspection.

03

A quote that never arrives

You send drawings to three shops. Two go quiet for a week because they have never cut a titanium thin wall, and the tooling cost they eventually quote is padded to cover their uncertainty. Your program slips while you wait.

04

Galling on the sealing face

Titanium galls against tooling and against mating steel parts. A turned O-ring groove or flange face picks up smeared metal, and the surface that was supposed to seal at pressure leaks during the bench test.

Our approach

How we machine titanium auto parts

Three things decide whether a titanium part comes off the machine in tolerance: tooling, heat control and how the part is held.

Cutting strategy

Tooling and coolant matched to the alloy

Ti-6Al-4V work-hardens fast. We cut it with sharp, uncoated carbide or AlTiN-coated inserts at low surface speed and high feed per tooth, so the heat leaves with the chip instead of soaking into the part. Through-spindle high-pressure coolant reaches the cutting edge on deep bores and long turning passes.

On a mill-turn center the part stays in one setup from bar to finished profile. Fewer setups means fewer chances to lose concentricity between a bearing journal and its bore.

  • 1
Low speed, high feedKeeps the cutting edge cool and stops work hardening.
  • 2
High-pressure coolantThrough-tool delivery on deep holes and long bores.
  • 3
One-setup mill-turnConcentricity held between journals and bores.

Fixtures that do not fight the part

Thin-wall titanium moves under clamp load. We build soft jaws, expanding mandrels or dedicated fixtures that spread the load over a large area, and we rough, stress-relieve and finish in separate passes so the part settles before the final cut.

Every job is measured on the CMM against the drawing, not against a first article that drifted. Raw material certificates come in before the bar is cut, in-process checks run on critical diameters, and the final report is available on request.

Alloy selection

Which titanium grade suits which auto part

Grade choice drives cost, weight and wear life. This is how we usually see it split.

GradeTypical auto partsWhy this grade
Ti-6Al-4V (TC4)Connecting rods, suspension arms, hub carriersHighest strength of the common grades; heat treatable
Commercially pure Ti (TA1/TA2)Exhaust shields, brackets, heat shieldsGood corrosion resistance, easier to form and weld
Ti-6Al-4V ELIBrake caliper pistons, valve componentsBetter toughness at low temperature

What we do

Services behind a titanium auto part

Most titanium auto parts need more than one operation. All of it runs under one roof in Dongguan, with a second plant in Singapore.

01

5-Axis CNC Machining

16 simultaneous 5-axis centers cut complex suspension and engine geometry in fewer setups, which protects positional tolerance between features.

02

CNC Turning & Mill-Turn

16 mill-turn centers handle shafts, pistons, bushings and fittings, turning and milling in a single cycle.

03

Rapid Prototyping

One-off titanium prototypes for fit checks and bench testing before you commit to tooling.

04

Surface Finishing

Anodizing, bead blasting, polishing, laser marking and plating, applied in house to titanium and its mating parts.

05

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Brackets, heat shields and covers cut and formed from titanium sheet, then finished to match the machined parts.

06

Inspection & Reporting

CMM measurement, material certificates and dimensional reports supplied with the shipment on request.

FAQs

Questions engineers ask about titanium auto parts

Which titanium grade should I specify for a suspension part?

Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) is the usual answer for load-bearing suspension and drivetrain parts. It heat treats to high strength and is stocked in bar and plate.

If the part sees mostly heat and corrosion rather than load, commercially pure TA2 costs less and machines more easily. Send the drawing and we will say which grade fits.

Can you hold ±0.005 mm on a thin-wall titanium part?

Yes, but the wall thickness and the length-to-diameter ratio decide how hard it is. Parts with walls under 1.5 mm need low-stress workholding and a rough-relieve-finish sequence.

We review the drawing before quoting and tell you if a feature will move after clamping. That conversation happens inside the 12-hour quote window.

How does titanium compare to aluminum for the same part?

Titanium is roughly 60 percent heavier than aluminum but about twice as strong, so a titanium part can be thinner and still carry the same load.

Machining cost is higher. Cuts run slower, tools wear faster, and the material costs several times more per kilogram. Use titanium where strength, heat or corrosion is the limiting factor.

Do you anodize titanium parts in house?

We anodize in clear, colored and hardcoat, plus bead blasting, polishing, black oxide, powder coating and laser marking.

Laser marking has a minimum character height of 1.5 mm. For titanium, hardcoat anodizing is the common choice for sliding or wear contact faces.

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is none. We machine from one prototype to 10,000+ part runs on the same equipment.

Prototypes are a normal way to start. Many projects prove the design on one titanium part before releasing a production batch.

How fast can I get parts?

Quotation and free DFM analysis come back within 12 hours. Production can start within 24 hours of drawing and material confirmation, and parts ship in 3–5 days.

Our historical late-delivery probability is below 2 percent. Exact timing depends on the alloy and whether material is in stock.

Is my design kept confidential?

Uploads are secure and confidential. We sign an NDA on request before drawings are shared.

Files stay inside the project team. We do not use customer parts or drawings in marketing material without written permission.

What do you need to quote a titanium part?

A 3D file or 2D drawing with tolerances, the alloy, the quantity and the finish you want. Tell us if any surface is a sealing or bearing face.

If the drawing is incomplete we will flag what is missing rather than guess. The DFM note comes back with the quote.
