01
Does your tooling keep breaking before the cycle ends?
The alloy work-hardens at the cut. Thermal conductivity runs roughly half that of 6061, so heat stays in the cutting zone and edge temperatures climb. Run too slow and the surface smears. Run too fast and the insert fractures. We set speeds, feeds and coolant pressure per feature rather than per material.
02
Are your thin walls springing open after unclamping?
Grade 12 has a low elastic modulus. A 1 mm wall on a filter housing can move 0.05 mm when the vise opens, and the part reads oversize on the CMM. Rough, stress-relieve, then semi-finish before the final pass. We leave stock on both sides and cut the last 0.3 mm with light radial engagement.
03
Do you get burrs inside a bore you cannot reach?
Cross-drilled holes in valve bodies leave a burr at the intersection. Hand deburring with a scraper leaves a witness mark and a variable edge. We drill from the correct side, use a controlled feed at breakthrough, and reach internal intersections with a back-chamfer tool or a small ball nose on a 5-axis path.
04
Has a supplier shipped a part with the wrong weld wire?
Grade 12 filler is often substituted with Grade 2, which looks the same and passes a visual check. The difference shows up later as preferential corrosion in the heat-affected zone. We hold mill certificates against the heat number, and we do not mix Grade 12 and Grade 2 stock on the same rack.
